Earthquakes: Lying causes places to be filled with filth and dirt. Slander turns the land into cliffs, abysses, and ravines. Harsh words turn the land into barren fields, thorns, and salt flats. Jests cause the four seasons to become imbalanced. Greed causes harvests to become meager and poor. Harmful intent causes good flavors to turn bad. Wrong views cause harvests to range from scarce to completely nonexistent, and so on. Thus, these concordant causes and lordly effects will certainly arise between this life and the next. Second, contemplating what to accomplish as virtue: In general, there are eighty-four thousand antidotes, etc., which are inconceivable. But broadly speaking, if summarized, it is to abandon the ten non-virtuous deeds previously shown in the mind, and to abide in that abandonment with the conduct of body and speech. Thinking, 'I shall always abide in this.' The meaning of abandoning the ten non-virtues in the mind is to know that they are faults of wrongdoing and never to desire them. The reversal of body and speech is not only to not constantly do those ten, but even if there is an opportunity to do them easily and profitably in the short term, the abandonment in the mind, with mindfulness, cannot engage in that action. For the seven of body and speech, both must be complete, while for the three of mind, it is only the abandonment in the mind. Thinking that non-virtue is unacceptable is the mind of abandonment, and knowing it in this way is the unmistaken conventional wisdom, so it becomes an antidote and is also the essence of ethics. If the force of abandonment is strong, even if interrupted by sleepiness and distraction, etc., when the condition is perceived, it is known as misconduct and becomes restraint. This arises from the power of the seed of that previous force. Therefore, the mind of abandoning the ten non-virtues, together with its seed, is the ten virtues. Moreover, in short, bodily actions such as circumambulation, offerings, going and coming for the sake of sentient beings and the Dharma; verbal actions such as praise, recitation, speaking for the sake of sentient beings and the Dharma, etc., all bodily and verbal activities taken up with virtue; and mental actions such as cultivating faith, respect, renunciation, loving-kindness, compassion, the mind of enlightenment, etc., all naturally virtuous thoughts should be diligently cultivated. As it says, 'Born from the absence of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, the actions born from that are virtuous.' Now, the fruits of those virtues are also threefold: the fully ripened result, ... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The result in accordance with the cause and the dominant result. First, these virtues, from beginning to middle to end, if all are grasped by the mind of virtue, then the power of virtue will become three kinds: large, medium, and small. The large will be reborn as gods in the upper realms, the medium will be reborn as gods in the desire realm, and the small will be reborn as humans. Even if it is a virtue, if it is due to impure motives, etc., it will be reborn as Asuras, as it is said in the sutras. Second, the result in accordance with the cause and the dominant result, just as it was said before when explaining the ten non-virtuous actions, here it has become an accommodating aspect. In the 'Garland of Gems' it says: 'Longevity, wealth, freedom from enemies, praise, widespread fame, good reputation, dignified words, wish fulfillment, inner peace, and increased wisdom, these are the ten accommodating causes of virtuous actions. Great strength, good harvest, pleasant scenery, moderate height, fertile fields, lush roots and stems, suitable seasons, plump grains, delicious taste, abundant fruits, these are the ten dominant results of virtuous actions.' Therefore, abiding in the ten virtues is the cause of happiness in this life and the next, so it is very important to strive to achieve it. Third, neutral actions, which are not grasped by either virtuous or non-virtuous motives, and whose results cannot be predicted as either suffering or happiness, such as eating and walking. Whatever you do, because you are wasting time on meaningless things, it is very important to transform it into virtuous actions. Therefore, 'The eating, walking, etc. that I do will not produce any results, nor will it become a cause for liberation from samsara. I have wasted so much meaninglessly, now I must transform it into virtuous actions no matter what.' All actions of body, speech, and mind should be grasped by the mind of enlightenment. The 'Four Hundred Verses' says: 'For a Bodhisattva with the mind of enlightenment, whether it is virtuous or non-virtuous, everything will become good, because the mind will be influenced by goodness.' The 'Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life' says: 'From today onwards, even if sleeping or careless, the power of merit will continue to increase like the sky.' Therefore, do not look outwards, but bring your attention back to your heart, and do your best to go to the end on the path of meaningful virtuous actions. Third, summarizing with the Four Truths: The so-called truth is the meaning of non-deception. From the cause, that is, the dependent origination of karma and afflictions, the result appears, that is, the three realms, which is also due to the power of the non-deception of cause and effect, these are the first two truths. By striving to cultivate the aspects of enlightenment, with the result --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
