The extent of karmic obstacles is: being struck by horns, wounded by teeth, committing suicide, the unnatural death of close relatives, the collapse of a house, being caught in a fire, losing a large number of livestock, being captured by enemies, being poisoned, self-cannibalism, being swallowed by garudas, snakes, or fish, one's own body being destroyed like dust, eating one's own heart, having the heart and liver of others given to oneself—these, although appearing as illusions, are actually karmic obstacles. Illusions similar to karmic obstacles are: being respected by many different kinds of women, being respected, welcomed, and seen off by many deceased, wearing black and blue hats, laying out blue and black cushions, wearing blue armor and black wool clothing, offering seepweed, saltpeter, raw meat, and cooked meat, eating garlic and vegetables, using wheat, rattan, Monpa cloth, black oil, iron tools, and black sugar, going to a garden of fresh flowers—these are all deceptive appearances and still remain. The difference between self-arising beings and illusions is: if there are snakes, frogs, etc., in one's own sleeping place, recite ཕཊཿ (Tibetan), फट् (Sanskrit Devanagari), phaṭ (Sanskrit Romanization), dispelling, visualize oneself as the dark blue Jetsunma (Tara), shooting twenty-one feathered arrows from her heart, the arrowheads made of meteoric iron, boiling with salt water, striking the black and white boundary of the heart of that being, visualizing it turning to ashes, and then recite ཕཊཿ (Tibetan), फट् (Sanskrit Devanagari), phaṭ (Sanskrit Romanization), dispelling, fiercely shooting in all directions twenty-one times. If it is determined that the being becomes larger or smaller, or jumps upwards, that is an illusion. Recite ཕཊཿ (Tibetan), फट् (Sanskrit Devanagari), phaṭ (Sanskrit Romanization), dispelling, visualize the being turning into a terrifying thing, oneself entering its mouth and being swallowed by it, then transforming one's lower body into a vajra stake, sitting on its head and subduing it. Again, visualize as before, recite ཕཊཿ (Tibetan), फट् (Sanskrit Devanagari), phaṭ (Sanskrit Romanization), dispelling, if the being runs away and disappears, then let it go wherever it wants, and do not regret it, this is very important. If the being stays on oneself, killing it is a great sin. If one is frightened by illusory beings due to conceptual thoughts, one will become ill and encounter obstacles, so one must be full of confidence. If one cannot distinguish between gods, demons, and robbers at night, recite ཕཊཿ (Tibetan), फट् (Sanskrit Devanagari), phaṭ (Sanskrit Romanization), dispelling, visualize oneself entering its mouth and being swallowed by it, then fiercely recite ཕཊཿ (Tibetan), फट् (Sanskrit Devanagari), phaṭ (Sanskrit Romanization), dispelling, if it is a god or demon, it will disappear. Then abide in emptiness. If one encounters a dangerous place or an enemy at another time, and one's possessions are stolen, cultivate loving-kindness and compassion, dedicate the merit, and repay harm with benefit, this is the best practice of Chöd. If one cannot do that, then occupy a favorable position, and in that dangerous place or elsewhere, defend until karmic obstacles appear. If karmic obstacles have already appeared, how to suppress them, etc., can be known from the instructions. The obstacles of Chöd. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elimination: If one runs away because of displaying miraculous powers, or becomes ill from begging, etc.; or if a beggar, fearing a patient's vomiting, takes them home and performs rituals, this is breaking the vow, and will bring many negative consequences. The patient will die quickly, so one must return to the original haunted site and stay there until the term is completed. In particular, one should visualize oneself as the glorious Ḍākiṇī Khamnak (Tibetan: ཁམས་ནག, literally: Black Realm), endowed with splendor. With the right hand pointing to the sky and the left hand holding the earth, shaking as if the sky and earth are collapsing, visualize the gods and demons approaching, making unpleasant noises out of fear, promising and vowing, and torment them until the term is completed. If one stays for a long time and there are no signs, it means the vow is decaying, and some measure must be taken. Also, in dreams, paying off debts, reversing black water, turning going upwards into going downwards, putting on clothes that have been taken off, chasing after tax collectors, carrying used items on one's back, re-tethering liberated animals, putting on black clothes, people with dark, frowning faces, and plowing fields into wasteland—these are all signs of the vow becoming scattered due to staying too long, so one must leave quickly. If one does not leave, the patient will suffer from various diseases. If one leaves the haunted site for a day and then returns, it means there is a hole in the vow, so one should visualize oneself as being in the haunted site and practice. 'If there is a hole in the vow, cherish the target,' it is said. If one must leave the haunted site before completing the term, it means the vow is broken. One should visualize oneself as Jetsunma (Revered Lady), gathering all the gods and demons with rays of light like iron hooks, and absorbing them into a pebble with the syllable Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Devanagari: हुं, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, literally: seed syllable) written on it under one's feet. Visualize the five classes of Ḍākiṇīs tightly holding that place with their fingers, placing it inside a container visualized as an iron box, binding the mouth with a black snake, carrying it on the body and placing it under the feet. Even if one leaves, one should visualize that place as still being the haunted site and practice. If one of many practitioners leaves, the leader should not allow it. Visualize oneself as countless iron vajras emanating from the heart of Jetsunma, forming a vajra tent that encompasses all the practitioners. This is the meaning of 'vajra tent'. Also, if the dwelling place does not suppress the haunted eye, and the haunted site is elsewhere, it means the vow is wandering. One should take earth, stones, and wood from the haunted eye of that place and place them under one's feet. Even after completing the term, one should stay for another day to observe if there is any deception or pursuit. Then, perform the inner and outer Chöd (severance) practice once, either inviting the refuge field of the sky or dissolving it into oneself. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
