To the assembly of deities of the three roots, I beseech you to consider me! For the purpose of offering to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and for following your disciple, I, named so-and-so, will draw the mandala of the Victorious Ones tomorrow, Please consider me with compassion and grant your blessings! Thus, one prays. At this time, in the white, round fire pit that is lit, visualize the deities of the three roots appearing instantaneously. Offerings such as clarified butter, milk-based fried dough, white sesame seeds, mustard seeds, and fried flour, as much as one can afford, are blessed into nectar with the three syllables (seed syllables, Devanagari script, Roman transliteration, literal meaning). Recite the root mantra and the concluding words: 'Pacify all disharmony and obstacles for us, shāntiṃ kuru ye svāhā!' (Tibetan, Devanagari script, Roman transliteration, literal meaning) Offer as much as possible, and leave the deities unvisualized. This is a concise fire offering. Third, the summary of the disciple's preparation: bathing, offering, requesting permission, accumulating merit, taking refuge, taking vows, blessing the three places, discarding the wooden stick, generating joy, giving the protection cord, and kusha grass. These are the eleven items. The first is: the disciples, like being born, etc., are bathed with the water of the activity vase. The second is: offering and collecting flowers are performed. Then, for the benefit of all sentient beings as vast as the sky, to attain the state of the root guru Vajradhara, who embodies all lineages in one lifetime and one body, for that purpose, receive the complete empowerment of the ultimate essence of all mind practices, and practice the two stages, generate the supreme Bodhicitta, and listen attentively with faith, respect, and wisdom. To this, we are born in the Jambudvipa, which is difficult to be born in, and have obtained the precious human body endowed with the eighteen leisures and endowments, which is difficult to obtain. At this time when we meet the rare lama, the virtuous spiritual friend, and hear the rare profound Dharma of the Great Vehicle, we must seize the path of liberation by all means. If we do not seize the path this time, after death we will wander endlessly in samsara, going from lower to lower, and we will not even hear the sound of Dharma. Therefore, now that we have rarely obtained a hundred precious human bodies, we must strive, because life is impermanent, like the shadow of a setting sun, and death approaches in an instant. At the time of death, nothing other than Dharma will help. Even with Dharma, there are inconceivable ways of practicing, but one must enter the Dharma of the perfectly enlightened Buddha in accordance with the rules. All the eighty-four thousand collections of Dharma, etc., are contained within the Great Vehicle. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All (Dharma) is contained within the Hīnayāna and the Mahāyāna. The Mahāyāna is further divided into the Mantrayāna and the Pāramitāyāna. We begin our practice from the Fruition Vehicle, which is the Mantrayāna. The Mantrayāna is further divided into the elaborate system of entering through individual maṇḍalas, and the simple system of entering through the profound Guru maṇḍala. We choose to enter through the lineage of the Guru, because the Guru is the lord of all maṇḍalas. The *Manifestation of the Sow* states: 'The Guru is the Buddha, the Guru is the Dharma, likewise, the Guru is the Saṅgha, the Guru is the agent of all actions.' The *Gongdü* states: 'The Guru is more important than the Buddhas of a thousand kalpas.' Why? Because the Buddhas of all those kalpas arose by relying on the Guru. Before the Guru existed, there was not even the name 'Buddha'. The *Play of Manifestation* states: 'Compared to meditating on hundreds of thousands of deities for millions of kalpas, merely remembering the Guru for a moment has limitless merit.' All maṇḍalas are contained within the Guru's maṇḍala, and all the intentions of the Buddhas are contained within the Guru's intention. If the Guru bestows blessings, it is as if all the Buddhas bestow blessings, and all the maṇḍalas bestow empowerment.' Therefore, one must enter the root maṇḍala of a qualified Guru, one who has definitely attained accomplishment. Here, we are speaking of the Guru Padmasambhava of Oḍḍiyāna, who is the direct manifestation of Amitābha Buddha for the benefit of beings. Merely hearing his name liberates one from the lower realms and saṃsāra. The greatness of his body lies in being born from a lotus stem without the defilement of the womb, possessing all the marks and signs of perfection. The greatness of his speech lies in turning the wheel of Dharma of the outer, inner, and secret teachings in accordance with the inclinations of those to be tamed. The greatness of his mind lies in knowing all phenomena, both as they are and as they appear, with wisdom, samādhi, and the attainment of the ocean-like extent of clairvoyance. The greatness of his qualities lies in the complete perfection of all the Buddha's qualities, such as the ten powers and four fearlessnesses. The greatness of his activity lies in benefiting beings of all kinds with emanations that tame them according to their needs, spontaneously accomplishing the four activities, and continuing to benefit beings like a wish-fulfilling jewel until saṃsāra is empty. The methods for practicing him are also the most profound and essential of all methods. As our own tradition states: 'Like me, Padmasambhava, the vidyādhara mantra-holder, [possesses] five bodies, eight names, and immeasurable paths of liberation.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
