. The teacher, the wise sage, said this: "O great sage, listen! Demons are of five kinds: elemental demons, madness-inducing demons, forgetfulness-inducing demons, planetary demons, and Naga demons. Elemental demons are explained in terms of five aspects: causes and conditions, characteristics, classifications, signs, and methods of treatment. The causes and conditions are the practice of many sinful and non-virtuous deeds, living alone without friends, despising and humiliating those with sores, the decline of offerings, and suffering from sorrow and pain. Inappropriate physical and verbal actions lead to involvement in negative activities. The characteristics are that elemental beings, such as non-humans, enter the body, speech, and mind, and change one's behavior. The classifications are gods, demi-gods, গন্ধর্ব (Gandharva), Nagas, Yakshas, Brahma, Rakshasas, flesh-eaters, pretas, Kumbhandas, sorcerers, wandering spirits, corpses, family gods, lamas, old sages, and accomplished ones, making a total of eighteen great demons. The signs are that one becomes less faithful and knowledgeable than before, one's physical, verbal, and mental behavior changes, and one engages in those behaviors. The mind becomes uneasy, one becomes easily discouraged, and one's awareness becomes confused. In particular, a god demon speaks Sanskrit The speech is pleasant, one sleeps little, the face is beautiful, and one is very clean. A demi-god is fond of meat and alcohol, looks askance, is angry and fierce, is arrogant, and is often reckless. A Gandharva is seductive, fond of fragrant smells, self-absorbed, enjoys singing, dancing, and playing, and desires red ornaments. A Naga demon is radiant, has bulging red eyes, stares fixedly, desires white and red, licks the tongue, and lies face down. A Yaksha is fond of giving and speaks secret words, hates doctors and Brahmins, and craves fish. Brahma calls out "Kye!" and recites scriptures, beats himself, scolds others, and loves to laugh. A Rakshasa is powerful, speaks harshly, and values red. A flesh-eater is ashamed, speaks in a low voice, and attacks opportunistically, cries for no reason, scratches the ground, and speaks irrelevantly. A preta acts like a preta, a non-human trembles with fear and does not desire food. A Kumbhanda has a black face, walks slowly, and has swollen testicles. A sorcerer clings to trees, runs naked, and lives in empty places. A wandering spirit desires water, is agitated, speaks incoherently, and does not desire food. A corpse speaks the truth, sleeps a lot, likes ornaments, and trembles. A family god has a dry mouth, squints, and wears clothes on the left side. Lamas, sages, old men, and accomplished ones, their respective behaviors and foods are in accordance with them. Some associate with children, run around naked, have disheveled hair, are mentally disturbed, and remain so for a long time.

Chapter on healing the madness-inducing ghost. Then, the sage Wisdom Intelligence again said this: "Hey, great sage, please listen. Regarding the disease of consciousness that causes madness, from the causes, conditions, classifications, symptoms, and treatments, four aspects are explained. The causes and conditions are weak heart strength, accompanied by sorrow, unpleasant mood, excessive thinking, unsuitable diet and behavior, ghosts as the instigating cause, leading to various imbalances, thereby causing consciousness (in the center of the eight-petaled lotus heart, there exists the king of the veins, Avadhuti, as thick as a horse's tail. Its four directions, six directions above and below, there are six empty veins, appearing in six colors. They are the gathering place of the six consciousnesses. If diseases and ghosts invade these seven places, memory will be lost, like the charioteer controlling the chariot).
