Among the Four Tantras of Medical Science, how should one study the Root Tantra? Please, King of Physicians (referring to the Buddha), explain. Having asked thus, the emanation of mind, the sage Rigpai Yeshe, spoke as follows: O great sage Yidley Kyé, first is the chapter index of the Root Tantra. The trunk with three roots entwined has nine. The branching limbs have forty-seven. The flourishing leaves number two hundred and twenty-four. The bright flowers and fruits ripen into five. These are the summaries of the Root Tantra. If explained in detail, it is like this: Disease, bodily humors, and excretions are of three types, divided into untransformed and transformed. The body is the place of dwelling and destruction. Disease is the three: wind, bile, and phlegm. Life-sustaining wind, upward-moving wind, pervasive wind, fire-accompanying wind, downward-voiding wind. Digestive wind, complexion-transforming wind, accomplishing wind, seeing wind, clarifying wind are five. Supporting, moistening, nourishing, satisfying, wealth-producing are fifteen. Essence, blood, flesh, fat, bone, marrow, semen, are the seven bodily essences, excretions are feces, urine, sweat. Like this, these twenty-five categories, through the three modes of taste, potency, and behavior, all abide equally, thereby increasing and changing. The opposite of this causes harm. Disease has three causes of arising, to which there are four co-arising conditions. Entering through six gateways, they settle in the upper, middle, and lower parts of the body. The pathways of movement are fifteen. Age, region, and season have nine modes of proliferation, ripening into nine life-threatening diseases. The opposing causes are twelve. The essential meaning is condensed into two: hot and cold. Like this, there are sixty-three diseases to be treated. To these, the three: desire, hatred, and ignorance, are respectively the causes of arising wind, bile, and phlegm. To these, there are four: time, demons, food, and behavior. These, having increased and decreased, spread on the skin, grow in the flesh, move in the vessels, adhere to the bones, enter the organs, and fall into the cavities. Phlegm relies on the brain, residing in the upper part. Bile relies on the liver and gallbladder, residing in the middle part. Wind relies on the hips and waist, residing in the lower part. Bones, ears, tactile sensation, heart, life, large intestine. Blood, sweat, eyes, and liver, gallbladder, small intestine, and

The pure essence of flesh, fat, bone marrow, excrement, and urine, as well as the nose, tongue, lungs, spleen, stomach, kidneys, and bladder, are said to be the pathways through which the body's essence, impurities, senses, and five viscera circulate with wind, bile, and phlegm. Old age is dominated by wind, middle age by bile, and childhood by phlegm, which is easier to cure. The region of wind is cold and biting, the region of bile is dry and hot, and the region of phlegm is said to be moist and oily. Wind diseases arise in summer at dusk and dawn, bile diseases in autumn at noon and midnight, and phlegm diseases in spring at twilight and early morning. When the three nutrients are exhausted, accumulation becomes the executioner. Combining similarities and key points, as well as wind diseases that have passed their time, the root of life is severed, heat diseases turn into cold that penetrates the bone marrow, and the essence cannot resist various harms. The result is said to be nine fatal diseases. The pacified and unpacified states of wind, bile, and phlegm each reverse into four, making a total of twelve. Wind and phlegm are cold water, while blood and bile are considered hot fire. Worms and serous fluid share both hot and cold conditions. Thus, through eighty-eight classifications, one can understand the various forms of disease. So it is said. In the Secret Quintessence of the Eight Branches of Ambrosia, the chapter on states and diseases is the third. ༄། །Chapter Four: Identifying Signs. Thereafter, the wise sage of knowledge spoke thus: O great sage, listen! Comprehensively understand diseases through observation, touch, and questioning. Observe the tongue and urine with the eyes; this observation is the visual cognition of objects. Touch the pulse with the fingers, communicate and transmit information; this observation is the analytical cognition of things. Inquire about causes, lifestyle, and diet with words; this observation is the auditory cognition of sound. The tongue of wind disease is red, dry, and rough; the tongues of bile and phlegm diseases are covered with a thick grayish-yellow coating. The tongue of phlegm disease is pale, dull, smooth, and moist. The urine of wind disease is like water with large bubbles. The urine of bile disease is reddish-yellow with much steam and a pungent odor. The urine of phlegm disease is white with little odor and steam. The pulse of wind disease is empty and floating, appearing and disappearing. The pulse of bile disease is rapid, expansive, and taut. The pulse of phlegm disease is deep, weak, and slow. Inquire whether fatigue, trembling, twitching, cold, and weeping are caused by rough diet and behavior, and by causes.
