Just as the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the perfectly complete Buddhas, and the great Bodhisattvas who dwell extensively on the great earth have generated the mind [of enlightenment], so too, I, who am called so-and-so, from this time forth, until I reach the essence of enlightenment, will generate the supreme, perfectly complete, great Bodhi-mind. Those sentient beings who have not been liberated, I will liberate; those who have not been freed, I will free; those who have not been given breath, I will give breath; those who have not completely passed into Nirvana, I will cause to completely pass into Nirvana. Repeat this three times. Explain the precepts of the aspiration mind, appropriately from those mentioned above, either in detail or in brief as appropriate. From the Sutra called 'Seven Dharmas' requested by the noble Avalokiteshvara and the Sutras such as 'Arrayed Tree,' learn in detail from those Sutras the various precepts and benefits that appear therein. Then, make aspirations as appropriate, and if summarizing, recite 'By this virtue may all beings,' etc. Again, make offerings to the Three Jewels, and offer gifts to the teacher. This, known as the ritual of generating the mind [of enlightenment], is the ritual of the aspiration mind. Since this ritual does not require examining the vessel, nor the eight precepts of individual liberation as preliminaries, it can be bestowed upon all who seek it. This is the mind generation transmitted from Maitreya. It is said that the teacher, the noble Asanga, composed a separate ritual of mind generation in India. That was compiled from a separate Sutra called 'Bodhisattva Pitaka,' which is not this one within the Ratnakuta. The intention of that is clearly explained in the ritual of mind generation composed by the glorious Atisha, and it is arranged here accordingly. Second, the ritual for taking the Bodhisattva vows: The Mahayana Sutras are what extensively teach the basis of the Bodhisattva's training, therefore one should hear many Sutras. Alternatively, listening to the 'Bodhisattva-bhumi' or the 'Compendium of Trainings' is also very good, because it is a collection of the essence of all Mahayana. The noble 'Jewel Cloud Sutra' or 'Akashagarbha'

It is necessary to receive at least one reading transmission of a sutra like the "Perfection of Wisdom" chapter. Having previously practiced the detailed guidance of the "Stages of the Path" (Lamrim), it can be considered as having heard the essence of the Mahayana. However, from the perspective of language and words, there is no way to avoid hearing at least one Mahayana sutra. Then, the actual method of taking the Bodhisattva vows is: Arrange offerings before the Three Jewels, prostrate to the Acharya 18-288 three times, and with palms joined, say: Acharya, I wish to receive the Bodhisattva's precepts from you. If there is no obstacle to this, please listen briefly and grant them to me out of compassion for me. Pray like this three times. If the disciple remembers these words, they should pray themselves. Otherwise, the Acharya or a friend should repeat them. Then, the Acharya says: Noble son, listen. Do you wish to do the following: liberate those who have not been liberated, free those who have not been freed, allow those who have not breathed to breathe, allow those who have not completely escaped from suffering to completely escape from suffering, and not let the lineage of the Buddha be cut off? The disciple also replies: Yes, I wish to do so. The Acharya says: Then, you must strengthen your aspiration and your chosen deity. Is it not for the sake of competing with others? No. Is it not being forced to accept by others? No. Ask and answer like this. Then, offer the offerings with most of the verses, including the offering verses, and praise and prostrate with appropriate verses such as "Protector, Great Compassionate One." Then, with respect, request the Acharya, saying: Please, Acharya, quickly grant me the Bodhisattva vows that I have received. Three times. The Acharya says: One named so-and-so, noble son, are you a Bodhisattva? He also replies: Yes. Have you made aspirations for enlightenment? I have. Then, the main part is the Acharya saying: Noble son, listen. All the trainings of all Bodhisattvas, 18-289 the basis of all, and the precepts of all Bodhisattvas.
