It is explained. This is called a verse, and its meaning is as follows: If one discerns in a reversed manner, then that is not its meaning. The so-called "that which the Buddhas have not attained" refers to: the past Buddhas, the Bhagavat, passed away without having attained the essence of the Tathagata, the uncreated Buddha-realm, adorned with limitless excellent marks and signs, exists in all sentient beings. The present Buddhas, the Bhagavat, even if they diligently search for the essence of the Tathagata, they cannot find it, but in all sentient beings, there exists the uncreated Buddha-realm, adorned with limitless marks and signs. In the three times, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, like bees, proclaim that there is the essence of the Tathagata, but the eye cannot see it, and the cause of this question has been pointed out. For example, Rahula's discipline and conduct are very serious, and he carefully observes the water with living beings, thinking: Is it living or not? Or is it something like dust? But it is not all like that. If one gradually observes, one can see tiny creatures, just like that, the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have attained the ten bhumis, they themselves can see that there is my self-nature in their own body, and like this, they can see in the boundless self-nature. Therefore, entering the Tathagatagarbha is very difficult, and those who, in a world like everywhere burning and fiercely burning, even give up their own lives to proclaim it, it is extremely difficult, which shows that doing so is beneficial. The Tathagatagarbha is only taught to those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, and not to others. Sentient beings are the self-nature Tathagata. For example, just like the undying one who possesses the divine eye, the undying one and the child with the flesh eye go together, if the child with the flesh eye looks at the traces of the bird flying in the sky, can the child with the flesh eye see the traces of the bird in the sky? The undying venerable one can see clearly, and the person with the flesh eye also trusts the venerable one very much and follows, just like that.

Like a child with fleshy eyes, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas believe in the teachings of all the Sutras, thereby knowing the existence of the Tathagatagarbha, but how can they truly see the Dharmadhatu of the realm of the Tathagatas? If the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas rely on others, just like blind people, how can they believe? In the past, it happened that this land turned into a place with four kinds of sweetness. I heard from the Buddhas of the past, perfect and complete Buddhas, who did not say anything else. Those beings who have tasted the four kinds of sweetness, until now, are like children eating soil. For a long time, they have found it delicious, and beings still cannot give it up. Similarly, in the presence of many Buddhas of the past, perfect and complete Buddhas, those beings who have practiced and extensively cultivated the Tathagatagarbha, still believe in the Tathagatagarbha. These beings have practiced for a long time and repay the Tathagatas, and are not others. In the future, those beings who hear and believe in the teaching of the Tathagatagarbha will not be others, but like the children of the Tathagatas eating soil, repaying the Tathagatas. Thus it is said. In the Lankavatara Sutra, in the chapters concerning "essence and definitive meaning," in the Lankavatara Sutra, Mahamati Bodhisattva asked: "World Honored One, in other sutras, the Tathagatagarbha is taught. The World Honored One said: 'Its nature is luminous, pure, and from the beginning, it is pure. It possesses the thirty-two marks and exists within the bodies of all beings.' World Honored One, just as a precious jewel is wrapped in a dirty cloth, it is wrapped in the cloth of the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas, covered by the stains of greed, hatred, and delusion, completely defiled by the stains of [permanence {discrimination}]. If it is said to be permanent, constant, and unchanging, World Honored One, how is this teaching of the Tathagatagarbha different from the 'self' taught by the heretics?"
