Collected Teachings of Master Tāranātha JT366, entitled "A Compilation of Scriptural References for the Ornament of Other-Emptiness Madhyamaka" 18-116 ༄༅། །A Compilation of Scriptural References for the Ornament of Other-Emptiness Madhyamaka ༄༅། །A Compilation of Scriptural References for the Ornament of Other-Emptiness Madhyamaka. Namo Guru Buddha Satvebhyaḥ! After respectfully prostrating to those worthy of prostration, For the beautiful ornament that adorns Other-Emptiness Madhyamaka, having already arranged it in detail, now for what is needed, I will gather a few of the supreme scriptural references. In that, at the time of "It is said to be definitive in meaning, and is accepted by the wise," In the Definitive Interpretation of Intentions, it says: "Bhagavan, to give an example, the sky is of one taste to all, and does not obscure all that is given. Similarly, the very non-existence of the essence of phenomena, and from the very beginning of the complete transcendence of suffering by its very nature, this definitive meaning taught by the Bhagavan is also of one taste to all the sutras of provisional meaning, and does not obscure all that is given to the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, and the Great Vehicle." This says that teaching the ultimate truth is directly explaining the definitive meaning, and the other side is understood incidentally, and it is said in that regard. Also, when teaching the inconceivable wisdom, it says: "Which sutras teach the establishment of conventional truth are called provisional meaning. Which sutras teach the establishment of ultimate truth are called definitive meaning. Which sutras are taught for the purpose of entering the path are called provisional meaning. Which sutras are taught for the purpose of entering the result are called definitive meaning." 18-117 Thus it is said. Similarly, in the Great Nirvana Sutra, it also says: "What is it to abide in the definitive meaning? Definitive meaning is contentment, never living by deception, not embellishing behavior, not being arrogant, not being attached to gain and fame, not being attached to the Dharma spoken by the Thus-Gone One as a means of skillful means, this is definitive meaning. Whoever abides in this, that person is said to abide in the true meaning, therefore abiding in the definitive meaning. What is it not to abide in the guiding meaning? Guiding meaning

From the sutras, it is said that all are afflicted, all are impermanent, all are suffering, all are empty, and all are without self. Saying this is the meaning of leading. Like this, also, the Hearer Vehicle is the meaning of leading. The unsurpassed Great Vehicle is the meaning of definitive. If someone says that the Tathagata is impermanent, changing and transforming, this is the meaning of leading. If someone says that the Tathagata is permanent, unchanging and unmoving, this is the meaning of definitive. Whatever is understood and realized by the Hearer Vehicle is the meaning of leading. What is understood and known by the teachings of the Bodhisattva is the meaning of definitive. If someone says that the Tathagata needs food to be nourished, this is the meaning of leading. If someone says that it is permanent, abiding, unchanging, and unmoving, this is the meaning of definitive. If someone says that the Tathagata's Nirvana is like a fire extinguished when the wood is exhausted, this is the meaning of leading. If someone says that the Tathagata has entered the Dharmadhatu itself, this is the meaning of definitive. Thus it is said. It is said in the Sutra of Extensive Differentiation of Inexhaustible Intelligence. In some treatises, the meaning of leading, which can be led to other views, is also explained as the meaning of needing to be led, which is a stepping stone to ultimately leading to the meaning of definitive, so these are not contradictory. Nagarjuna and the brothers Asanga, in the context of the "Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma," the Root Wisdom says: "The Blessed One, regarding existence and non-existence, in the teachings of the wise Katyayana, forbade both existence and non-existence." Thus, in the first turning of the wheel, the doctrine of being free from extremes is also established. It also says, "Nirvana is the only truth," and so on. Therefore, the intention of the intermediate turning of the wheel is also to explain the ultimate Other-Emptiness. All the treatises of Maitreya and the brothers Asanga are to condense the intention of all three turnings of the wheel into one. For example, the Ornament of the Sutras alone explains the intention of all three turnings of the wheel, and does not show three different views and tenets, but shows only one view. In the context of "medicine for the sick," the Lankavatara Sutra says: Just as a sick person is sick
