Om. After that, there was an earthquake, a meteor fell, sounds were heard in all directions, and the drums of the gods sounded. At that time, the great Venerable Mahākāśyapa was in Rājagṛha. When he felt the earthquake, he observed and knew that the Tathāgata had passed into Nirvāṇa. He thought, "If King Ajātaśatru suddenly hears this news, he will vomit blood and die, so a plan must be devised." Then he went to the place of the Brahmin Varṣakāra and said, "Varṣakāra, you should know that the Teacher has passed into Nirvāṇa. If the king suddenly hears this news, it will not be good, so from the entry into the womb to the final resting place, draw pictures of it in the Śītavana (Tibetan: གྲང་བའི་ཚལ།, Sanskrit: Śītavana, Romanized Sanskrit: shitavana, meaning: cold forest). When the king comes out, let him see the pictures of the Śītavana, and then tell him the contents of each picture one by one, saying, 'This is this, and that is that.' Say, 'This is entering the final resting place in the city of Kuśinagara.' When you say this, King Ajātaśatru will faint and fall to the ground. At that time, you should put King Ajātaśatru successively into seven containers filled with fresh ghee, and then put him into the eighth container filled with sandalwood Gośīrṣa oil, so that he can recover." After teaching in this way, Mahākāśyapa gradually went in the direction of the city of Kuśinagara. Immediately after the Blessed One passed into Nirvāṇa, Indra and Brahmā also specifically spoke of impermanence. Some gods were crying, some were rolling around, and some were abiding by the Dharma nature. Many monks who had not attained detachment were grieving and crying, uttering laments. Many were relying on the Dharma nature, thinking, 'All pleasant and painful things are of the nature of separation.' The Teacher himself had already said this before. Because of Anuruddha, Venerable Ānanda said to the monks, "If you do not slowly quiet down, the gods will laugh at us." Ānanda also slowly signaled the grieving monks to quiet down. One hundred and nineteenth, cremation of the relics. One hundred and nineteenth, cremation of the relics. Afterwards, when it dawned, urged by Anuruddha, Ānanda went to Kuśinagara and said to the five hundred strong men who had gathered, "Yesterday at midnight, the Teacher passed into Nirvāṇa. You must..."

Perform the actions and make offerings. There, the giants fell into sorrow, carrying various offerings such as flowers and incense, and made offerings to the remains. There, the giants said to the remains of the Tathagata: We will make offerings by cremation and other means, how should we make offerings? Ananda replied: Just as it is done for the remains of a Chakravartin king, it should be done this way and that way. Then, because it cannot be completed in two or three days, it will be done after seven days, so each day the giants make offerings with many offerings. Other gods and humans also make offerings with countless offerings, and after seven days they also collect the utensils. From the twin Sala tree grove to the city of Kushinagar, and all the streets of Kushinagar, all the roads from Kushinagar to the stupa with the giants' headdress are cleaned. Decorated with victory banners, flags, and streamers. Various offerings such as flowers and incense are arranged. Like the treatment of the remains of a Chakravartin king, the remains are greatly respected, placed in a jeweled palanquin, and decorated with umbrellas and garlands. The wives of the giants raise the curtains, the young men lift the palanquin, and the giants walk making offerings of garlands and the like. Having said this, when they lifted the palanquin of the remains, they could not move it even a little. Because it did not stop, they observed and understood the thoughts of the gods, and did as the gods wished. The giant women held the curtains, the young men lifted the palanquin, and the offerings above and below the remains were made by the gods. The giant leaders understood all these circumstances, lifted it from the twin Sala tree grove, entered through the west gate of the city of Kushinagar, passed through the center of the street, exited from the east gate, and invited it to the front of the stupa with the giants' headdress. There, the gods rained down a shower of Mandarava flowers, and the scattered flowers from the Sala twin trees to the stupa reached a height that submerged the knees. There, the giants to the Tathagata

Having passed away, they wished to make offerings to the remains, so they covered the body with cottonwood leaves, wrapped it with five hundred pieces of the finest linen, placed it in an iron box, filled it with fragrant clarified butter, and placed it on top of a pile of fragrant wood. When they tried to light the fire, they were unable to ignite it. Since it could not be lit, they investigated with clairvoyance, and the gods also said: "The Tathagata's remains are not yet destroyed. Until the Venerable Kashyapa has seen them, no one will be able to light the fire." Having learned this, they informed the giants and waited a little while. Then, the Venerable Kashyapa, accompanied by a retinue of five hundred monks, came to see the Tathagata's remains. When they arrived in a sinful land, they met a herdsman who was carrying a divine flower. Upon inquiring, they learned: "The Shramana Gautama has passed into nirvana seven days ago, and this is a flower offered to his remains." Hearing this, an old man said: "O Shramanas, what should I do? What should I not do? I should be liberated from these. What can be done should be done, and what cannot be done should not be done." After he said this, the gods obscured the sound so that no one but Kashyapa could hear it. Kashyapa subdued and restrained the old man with the Dharma, and instructed the five hundred monks in the Dharma with the teaching of impermanence. At the time when the giants were unable to light the fire, the Venerable Kashyapa, along with his retinue, also arrived at the place of the stupa where the giants had placed their headdresses. There, they opened the reliquary, carefully gazed upon the undiminished remains, and prostrated themselves. At that time, there were four great Shravakas near the remains: Kaundinya, Uruvilva-Kashyapa, Kashyapa with the Ten Powers, and Maha-Kashyapa. Then, because the Venerable Kashyapa possessed the power of merit, five hundred pieces of the finest linen also arrived at that very place. Together with the previous ones, they wrapped the remains with a thousand pieces of linen and a thousand Dharma robes, and then placed them in the reliquary as before. As the people retreated slightly and sat down, the fire ignited spontaneously. Soon after, the remains were cremated.
