Earth is samsara, and the mind of conventional truth, and the mind that is divided by the duality of mind and mind-nature. The mind of ultimate truth is also the mind of dharmadhatu and union. At times, the mind of conventional truth may also be indicated by terms such as self-luminous nature, mind-nature, and wisdom. Although it may be referred to because it is only a similar example, or because it is shown after seeing some necessary differences, it is not real, but merely a designation. 4-351 The second point is to cite the scriptural authority to prove this: the identification of the two minds. From the Glorious Stainless Light: Thus, the distinctions such as the self-awakening of the nature of the mind of samsara are determined to be four types. And, because it is the dharma-nature of the mind that is liberated from the habitual tendencies of samsara, therefore, whatever mind has mind is not mind. Thus, the Blessed One, by the name of Vajradhara, spoke of another mind of nirvana that is separate from the mind of samsara. That is to say, the mind of the four states is the mind of samsara, and the mind that is originally liberated from all defilements is the mind of nirvana. Again, some may think like this: the mind of samsara is just that, but the mind of nirvana is said to be the dharma-nature of the mind that is liberated from habitual tendencies, so it refers to the dharmadhatu wisdom of the perfect Buddha who possesses two kinds of purity, and it cannot be identified as the mind of sentient beings. This refers to this. To this it is argued: It is not like that. In the scripture cited above, the root words to be explained by the name of Vajradhara are: Among them, Vajradhara is neither self-nature nor transformation, and has no pervasive self-nature. And, in its commentary it also says: Among these, such as earth, Vajradhara is neither self-nature nor transformation, thus the mind of nirvana abides in earth and so on. And, again, in the same it says: Earth and so on are called self-nature and transformation, which are impure aggregates of samsara and so on, thus it is said that earth and so on are samsara, so the dharma-nature of the dharma of samsara, or the mind of samsara-dwellers is clearly established to be self-luminous.

Furthermore, it is said that just as when water is taken in a vase, the sky does not go with it. 4-352 The all-pervading Vajradhara of space, being separate from place and form, abides in the center of the body in suchness. Moreover, in its commentary, it is also said that the mind of nirvana, which transcends samsara and abides in all actions, is neither bound nor liberated by anything. This statement is also very clear. The third point is to establish through refutation: Again, one might think like this, that the mind of nirvana mentioned here only refers to the nature of nirvana, and is not the actual nirvana. That is just the mind of samsara, merely that its nature is not established, or that it is simply without truth. It is not appropriate to distinguish between consciousness and wisdom, is it? If one thinks like that, it is established that what is indicated by the symbol of Vajradhara is also wisdom, and because it is said to be different from the mind of samsara, these two are consciousnesses, and their essence is different. The nature of nirvana exists, but it is not the actual nirvana. If one thinks like that, it itself proves that it is the actual nirvana, because the nature of nirvana is the main part of nirvana, and the nirvana in which temporary stains are removed by the path is only a nominal nirvana. The first reason is that the nature of nirvana is the reality of things, and the nirvana in which temporary stains are removed is only the appearance of dependent origination from the accumulation of conventional causes and conditions; the second reason is that the nature of nirvana is the object of non-conceptual wisdom, and the temporary one is the object of subsequent pure conduct; the third reason is that Buddhas see self-appearing phenomena as naturally pure, and from the temporary one only the other-appearing phenomena of those to be tamed arise; the fourth reason is that all conventional samsaric dharmas have never existed from the beginning, so Buddhas see that naturally pure one, and since there are no two obscurations, the previously existing and the later removed, to be seen, the temporary one is not seen by the wisdom of the Buddhas; the fifth reason is that the nature of nirvana is primordial, so it exists in all occasions of samsara and nirvana, therefore.
