Merely from the opposite side, it does not become an antidote to destroy the seeds. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish that the Samadhi of immeasurable love can destroy the seeds. Because love and so on are not contrary to ignorance, they cannot completely eliminate faults. To assume that one is proficient in wisdom merely by relying on rough speech and superficial guesses is the conduct of the unwise. Furthermore, although Bodhisattvas have abandoned the afflictions that arise in the three realms, they still take birth in Samsara by the power of aspiration and Samadhi. They do not abandon the actions of benefiting sentient beings, and all of this is the power of the four immeasurables. Therefore, abandoning afflictions and their faults, and the deeds of the noble ones benefiting sentient beings, are the main benefits explained. Furthermore, explaining the function of immeasurable mind from the perspective of the five fruits is also a manifestation of benefit. As it is said in the sutra: 'Abiding in the abode of Brahma's dwelling, the wise are always pleased to be born. He perfects all retinues, and also matures all sentient beings. He is always inseparable from Brahma, and separated from his opposing qualities. Even if he becomes negligent, it is by him, and the inexhaustible cannot change him.' Various benefits will be explained below. The third point is the nature: wishing sentient beings to encounter new happiness that they have never had before is love; wishing to be separated from the suffering they are currently experiencing, and to prevent the door of future suffering from arising, is compassion; rejoicing and being pleased with the present happiness of other sentient beings, and the mental happiness that arises from this, is joy; the distinction of a non-attached mind, which is induced by the previous three and is equivalent to non-hatred, is equanimity. Therefore, equanimity itself is a virtuous mind {good [etc.] is a foothold}, which arises from the cause of non-attachment and non-hatred, and is an equal mind without bias towards near or far. The first three, such as love, may be mixed with elements of attachment, which is affliction, and faults follow. Therefore, in order to eliminate this fault, equanimity has the characteristic of non-attachment and non-mixing with afflictions.

It is said to be endowed with that nature. Compassion is characterized by removing obstacles to the happiness of others. Loving-kindness and joy are the actual desire for the happiness of sentient beings. Therefore, all three are merely thoughts of happiness. Equanimity, from the aspect of non-hatred, also has the characteristic of contemplating happiness. Moreover, because it is the very thought of placing oneself without attachment and sentient beings in non-attachment and non-hatred, it is the very thought of benefit. Therefore, equanimity is the thought of both benefit and happiness. The essence of the four, such as loving-kindness, is like that. To become immeasurable, the object is to focus on immeasurable sentient beings, the aspect is to establish immeasurable happiness, and to desire to separate immeasurable suffering, and so on. [The object is to focus on the immeasurable happiness of immeasurable sentient beings, and the mental happiness drawn from joy and contentment.] The essence is that there should be no distinction between enemies, friends, and neutrals, and that all equally desire happiness, and so on. Thus, the characteristics of immeasurable loving-kindness and so on are like that. Remaining with one-pointed mind through having such an object and aspect is the samadhi of the four immeasurables. These immeasurables, even if they are just aspiration and mental activity, are unsurpassed virtue, because they benefit all sentient beings. The fourth meaning is the division: As it is said, "The steadfast ones' desire for happiness, and the distress of suffering and happiness, the afflicted ones and their treatises, and the suchness of that are fully entered." It is said that each of the four immeasurables can be divided into three: focusing on sentient beings, focusing on Dharma, and having no focus. "The afflicted ones and" up to that point is spoken of in terms of focusing on sentient beings. Without specifically prohibiting the grasping of self, sentient beings, and persons, from the desire for sentient beings to be happy, up to the desire to place sentient beings with afflictions of attachment and aversion in non-affliction, are the four, such as loving-kindness, that focus on sentient beings. Some people think that it is necessary to grasp sentient beings as real, but this is unreasonable. Now, in the traces of those who appear as sentient beings, after there are no sentient beings, there are only aggregates, elements, and sense bases. Knowing that it is only imputed as sentient beings to the collection of aggregates and so on, 4-169 After that, the object is complete.
