This is inconsistent with the tenets of later Prāsaṅgikas. The first view merely negates the true establishment of what is to be refuted, and gives the name of non-inherent existence to what is to be established, and whether or not one involuntarily clings to the subsequent inference depends on whether or not it has arisen. But such a view is not the tenet of the Svātantrika-Madhyamaka school, because what is to be refuted is not truly established, therefore it negates true establishment, and things like illusions are also not existent in reality and ultimate truth. If it exists anywhere, it must be explained as existing in conventional truth. As it says in the Ornament and the Two Truths: 'How can the negation of the self-nature that is examined become non-inherent?' and 'Because what is to be refuted is not existent, it is clear that there is no negation in reality. Therefore, this is conventional.' The second view, to assert it in that way, let alone the Prāsaṅgikas, is not the view of anyone who speaks of emptiness of inherent existence, because, as it says in the Root Wisdom, in conventional terms, merely the recognition of ultimate truth, such as the five special profoundnesses, cannot be grasped by either of the two valid cognitions (perception and inference). To explain this, there are two parts: From the point of view of reasoning, because there is no self-character, it cannot be grasped by perception; if it is grasped by inference, it goes into elaboration and contradicts ultimate truth. If there is no self-character, then there can only be a universal character, therefore it is contradictory that it cannot be measured by inference. If you admit that it can be measured, then that is indeed the case, but Lotsawa Chenpo (the Great Translator) does not consider it measurable, because he does not consider it an object of consciousness. From the point of view of scripture, Jowo-je (Atiśa) said: 'The two valid cognitions, perception and inference, can realize, are the words of the foolish who only see this shore.' etc., and 'The two kinds of consciousness, conceptual and non-conceptual, cannot realize.' The scholar Bhāviveka said. Then he said: 'Then what realizes it?' The student of Nāgārjuna, Candrakīrti, from the oral instructions transmitted from him, the nature of reality can be realized.' And regarding the meaning of realization, it also says in the same text: 'Seeing what has not been seen, is spoken of in the very profound sūtras.' And the oral instructions of that time made by Jowo, Lotsawa Chenpo also made a commentary on that text, and the reasoning of that time is explained to be consistent with making the Commentary on Valid Cognition. If you say, then is it not necessary to admit that the other-elimination of the profound, free from elaboration, is clearly measured by inference? That is very necessary. Measuring in that way harms the grasping of ultimate truth in the lower yogas. As it is said: 'Yogis also, due to the difference in intelligence, of the higher and higher ones' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding the point of 'Ground Damage' (ས་གནོད།, sa gnod), the great translator (lo chen) explained it as such. Even so, since the elimination of others is explained as conventional truth, there is no fault. The second part has two points: detailed explanation and concise presentation. The first point is that in the context of discussing emptiness of inherent existence (ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་མེད་པ།, ngo bo nyid med pa), all knowable objects (ཤེས་བྱ།, shes bya) must be explained as empty (སྟོང་པ།, stong pa). In that case, one might ask: How can one accept the classification of characteristics (རྟགས།, rtags) as the basis of inference, the three modes (ཚུལ་གསུམ།, tshul gsum), and the valid cognition (ཚད་མ།, tshad ma) that determines them? To this, those who hold the view of non-apprehending Madhyamaka (དབུ་མ་རྣམ་མེད་པ།, dbu ma rnam med pa) or favor the Prasangika (ཐལ་བ་པ།, thal ba pa) school would assert: 'All these collections of phenomena are not established by valid cognition.' They do not keep the reality in mind, but rather ignore it, negating it merely from the level of the general and specific characteristics of phenomena. If this is not negated, the characteristics of phenomena cannot be overcome, thus hindering the understanding of non-apprehension. And those who hold the view of apprehending Madhyamaka (སྣང་བཅས་པ།, snang bcas pa) or follow the Svatantrika (རང་རྒྱུད་པ།, rang rgyud pa) school would argue: 'If one merely negates phenomena, the subject of the inference (ཆོས་ཅན།, chos can) would not exist, which would cause the collapse of the classification of the basis of inference, so one cannot negate phenomena.' When negating the truth of what is to be negated (བདེན་པ།, bden pa) and making it the dharma for proving non-truth (བདེན་མེད།, bden med), one must also ignore the opposite of the dharma (རྟགས་ཆོས།, rtags chos) that is the basis of inference—truth, and the oneness and multiplicity of truth, because if one does not do so, the characteristics of truth cannot be overcome, thus hindering the mind that measures non-truth. Those two people who speak in this way have fallen away from the great path of reasoning that generates valid cognition and have fallen into the great sorrowful wilderness of wrong views. To understand this, there are two points: general unreasonableness and specific unreasonableness. First, the general unreasonableness is: Even though the former proponent has already established that all dharmas are empty, when refuting the wrong views of the latter proponent, one must make the three modes of the basis of inference appear in the minds of both proponents, otherwise, because there is no concept at all, they will become completely confused, and all classifications of the basis of inference and the subject of inference will collapse. The second point is divided into: the unreasonableness of the first view and the unreasonableness of the latter view. First, the unreasonableness of the first view is: When engaging in contemplating reality, since there is no dharma whatsoever, one does not accept the classification of the basis of inference, inference, and valid cognition, which is a mistake caused by not understanding the good system of the author of the Commentary on Valid Cognition (རྣམ་འགྲེལ།, rnam 'grel). Because in that system, even if the three characteristics of the basis of inference on the phenomenal level are not observed, the three dharmas that are the object of negation, etc., are the main basis for negation and establishment. As it is said: 'External objects are not the basis, sound and meaning, relying on this.' and 'Sound and meaning are the same basis as this.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
