Great Scholar Shakya Chokden's Instructions Collection skc162: A Commentary on the 'Nectar Drops' Epistle, Called 'The Wish-Fulfilling Garden' The Commentary on the 'Nectar Drops' Epistle, Called 'The Wish-Fulfilling Garden' The Act of Entering the Explanation: Praising and Pledging to Compose The Commentary on the 'Nectar Drops' Epistle, Called 'The Wish-Fulfilling Garden'. Svasti. Homage to you who have been prophesied to make clear and uphold the precious teachings of the Buddha, who manifests as the victorious ones and the sons of the victorious ones, and who teaches! Whatever tradition of chariots has been spoken by the victorious ones themselves, I contemplate here the complete body of explanations of those treatises. Having first offered praise and made the commitment to compose, the Dharma that is to be explained is the sun that dispels the darkness of the snowy lands, the treatise called 'Nectar Drops' sent by the great master Lodrö Zangpo to his disciples. This has three meanings: the act of entering the explanation, the actual placement of the explanation, and the act of completing the explanation. The first has two parts: the praise, such as 'Lord of the World', and the second is the auspicious dedication to the object to be chosen, such as 'the basis of faith', two verses. The Actual Placement of the Explanation: Establishing the Identification of the Profound and Vast Paths The second has three parts: establishing the identification of the profound and vast paths, how to practice them on the path, and the establishment of the state of Buddhahood as the result. The first has two parts: how to enter the side of vast conduct, and how to enter the side of profound view. How to Enter the Side of Vast Conduct The first has three parts: how to gradually enter the paths of the three types of persons, how to train in the three trainings after entering, and how to accomplish the benefit of others perfectly after training. The first has three parts: first, contemplating the cause and effect of actions and entering the path of higher realms, such as 'of birth', one verse. In the middle, contemplating the faults of cyclic existence and learning to destroy the collections of afflictions, such as 'full of suffering', one verse. Thirdly, how to enter the path of the great person has three parts: the benefits of generating the supreme mind of enlightenment, such as 'death lord, destroyer of demons', one and a half lines.

The first is generating the aspiration Bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment), which is 'happiness' etc., half a verse and three lines. The second is generating the engaging Bodhicitta, which is 'liberation' etc., one verse. The second part is 'suffering' etc., one verse. The third part is divided into two parts, the first is to induce others to generate faith, which is 'practice Dharma' etc., two lines. The second is to benefit others, which is 'spiritual friend' etc., one verse. These are not elaborated in detail because they are easy for the later wise people to understand. How to enter the profound view: The establishment of profound emptiness depends entirely on scripture and reasoning. The second part has three points: The establishment of profound emptiness depends entirely on scripture and reasoning; refuting the views of other schools; explaining one's own views according to the scriptures. The first part has two points: A special way of explaining the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) reasoning collection is needed; the basis for explaining this can only be the scriptures of Nagarjuna. The first point is: The door to enter the nature of all phenomena being empty is only the correct reasoning collection spoken by Nagarjuna himself, and the magnificent treatise 'Pramanavarttika' (Commentary on Valid Cognition), which thoroughly explains the ultimate of reason. After clearly understanding from it, discard all other evil views like discarding grass. As it is said, but such explanations, whether in words or meaning, have become very unsuitable for later Tibetans. They would think: The way of explaining the Madhyamaka reasoning collection, apart from the two truths of conventional and ultimate, cannot show other special features. In particular, the ultimate meaning arising from 'Pramanavarttika' abides in the Mind-Only school, so wouldn't the reasoning collection fall into Mind-Only? To eliminate this doubt, it is necessary to explain it generally and consider its meaning. First, this great being believes that the ultimate meaning arising from 'Pramanavarttika', as explained in 'Pramana-alankara' (Ornament of Valid Cognition), is the Madhyamaka, which is the top of the four schools. As it is said: 'Eliminating all wrong views, the non-dual ultimate, focusing on rational analysis, this treatise.' And 'Following the flow of wrong paths, it is very difficult to stop the torrent of views, but if guided well by correct reasoning, why wouldn't it flow into the minds of some?' From these scriptures, it can be seen that the way of guiding with reason is also determined as two objects of measurement, and it is widely explained that general characteristics are not established by their own nature. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
