It is considered that it should not be abandoned, and since the mode of refutation is not explained, it acknowledges self-emptiness, and since it does not understand the way in which the subject of proof is established without contradiction, that method is not good either. This is the thought (of Je Tsongkhapa). Regarding this, it is also necessary to explain why the explanations of others are not appropriate. Secondly, most of those who come here under the well-known name of 'Paṇḍita' (Sanskrit: Paṇḍita, wise person), are not skilled in the scriptures, are led by their own bad thoughts, cling to extremes, and denounce the correct path. Therefore, do not abandon Nāgārjuna's (Sanskrit: Nāgārjuna) method of explanation because of their words. Thinking about the meaning of this sentence, there is a general meaning and a specific meaning. Firstly, in Tibet, in the past, there were those who 'suddenly realized' (Tibetan: brda) through hearing and thinking, and practiced emptiness through inference, and yogis practiced emptiness through direct perception. There were also terms such as the Paṇḍita's analytical meditation and the layman's abiding meditation. Even in the Maitreya teachings, there were explanations according to the method of hearing and thinking, and explanations according to the method of meditation. Furthermore, the Pacification School and the Mahāmudrā School, without relying on scriptures, believed that they could realize the meaning of reality solely through oral instructions. Considering those who believed that realizing the meaning of reality did not require reliance on scriptures, is it said that one should not abandon Nāgārjuna's scriptures? It needs to be examined. If that is the case, then it would be very agreeable to the later Tibetans, because they would say that if the ultimate view is not determined by the reasoning of Nāgārjuna, then other methods would become foolish meditation. However, for Vajrayāna practitioners, there are also statements that the way of realizing the view without relying on Nāgārjuna's scriptures is very special, so it is difficult to generalize. Secondly, it is certain that this is said only in terms of the Pāramitāyāna, and if that is the case, then it is difficult to identify which Paṇḍitas and their treatises are affected by the faults of clinging to extremes, etc. As it is said: 'There is no need for direct perception and inference, in order to refute the arguments of others.' If that is said, then if it denies inference based on credible reasons, then it will also indirectly refute itself. Furthermore, some minor Indian treatises that do not conform to the Madhyamaka collections of reasoning and explain the definitive meaning in their own way were brought to Tibet by some people named Paṇḍita. Is it referring to those treatises translated by the translators? For example, the commentary on the Ten Suchnesses, etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

在一位名为那吉·杰贝多杰(Na-cig skyes-pa'i rdo-rje)的译师所翻译的著作中,有这样的话:‘如果想了解真如(de-bzhin-nyid),它既不是有相(rnam-bcas)也不是无相(rnam-med)。’这表明即使是龙树(Klu-sgrub)的无相宗(rnam-med)也无法完全把握真如的含义。此外,还有‘没有上师之语庄严的,仅仅是书写中观(dBu-ma)而已。’这说明理聚(rigs-tshogs)的中观并未被阐释为伟大的中观。虽然文殊('Jam-dpal)的见解要义在那时还未被翻译,但在现存的梵文版本中,有‘五蕴(phung-po)被彻底剖析为空性(stong-pa-nyid),如同水中的树木,毫无实质。’这些话是否是您所指的呢?我应该这样思考。当您教导您的弟子时,您说:‘你也应该通过理智来学习经藏(sde-snod chos),这样才能对法性(chos-nyid)的证悟生起可靠的定解。’ 第二部分分为两点:简要地驳斥,以及详细地解释驳斥的内容。 第一点是:‘那些想要以理智的力量来确定诸法(don-rnams)的体性,以及想要以量(tshad-ma)来确定超越世俗('dus-byas lam-'das)的真如(de-nyid)的人,这两种执着于实有(dngos-'dzin)的观念,就像可怕的邪魔附身,被见解的利齿紧紧咬住。’这段话是针对那些追随自续派(rang-rgyud-pa)和他空派(gzhan-stong-pa)且未能深入理解其宗义的人说的。在过去,那些被称为‘以幻相成立理证’、‘以无遮遣衡量’或‘将空性执为实相’的中观行者,如果他们承认自己对这些观念的执着已经深入骨髓,那就如同中了无法医治的毒药。这是因为,对于如所有(ji-lta-ba)和尽所有(ji-snyed-pa)的诸法,那些自认为是自续派的人,当他们以理聚所出的理智力量进行分析时,他们会说:‘需要成立的显现(snang-ba)并非如幻,或者说,所谓的‘显现无自性’并非通过无遮遣的方式来成立,而是通过依赖于某个特定的因(rtags)的推理(rjes-dpag)来证悟究竟的真实。’而那些自认为是应成派(thal-ba-pa)的人则说:‘必须通过量来确定和证悟超越一切世俗,远离一切戏论(spros-pa)的真如,否则就会像石女的儿子一样毫无意义。’这些观点在后来的藏地非常流行,因为如今中观的究竟教义似乎仅限于此。 本论认为这些观点是不合理的,原因有二:前一种观点与自续派的宗义相悖;

In the works translated by a translator named Na-cig skyes-pa'i rdo-rje, it says: 'If you want to know the Suchness (de-bzhin-nyid), it is neither with characteristics (rnam-bcas) nor without characteristics (rnam-med).' This shows that even Nagarjuna's (Klu-sgrub) non-characterization (rnam-med) does not fully grasp the meaning of Suchness. In addition, there is 'Without the adornment of the Guru's words, it is merely writing Madhyamaka (dBu-ma).' This indicates that the Madhyamaka of the collections of reasoning (rigs-tshogs) has not been explained as the great Madhyamaka. Although the essence of Manjushri's ( 'Jam-dpal) view was not translated at that time, in the existing Sanskrit versions, it says, 'The aggregates (phung-po) are completely analyzed as emptiness (stong-pa-nyid), like trees in the water, without essence.' Are these the things you are referring to? I should think so. When you taught your disciples, you said, 'You should also study the Tripitaka (sde-snod chos) through reason, so that a reliable understanding of the nature of reality (chos-nyid) will arise.' The second part is divided into two points: briefly refuting and explaining the refutation in detail. The first point is: 'Those who want to determine the nature of phenomena (don-rnams) by the power of reason, and those who want to ascertain the Suchness (de-nyid) that transcends the mundane ( 'dus-byas lam-'das) with valid cognition (tshad-ma), both of these clinging to substantiality (dngos-'dzin) are like being possessed by a terrible demon, tightly gripped by the sharp teeth of views.' This passage is addressed to those who follow the Svatantrika (rang-rgyud-pa) and Shentong (gzhan-stong-pa) schools and have not deeply understood their tenets. In the past, those Madhyamikas who were known as 'establishing reasoning through illusion,' 'measuring through negation,' or 'taking emptiness as a characteristic,' if they admit that their clinging to these concepts has become deeply ingrained, it is like being poisoned by an incurable poison. This is because, for all phenomena of suchness (ji-lta-ba) and all phenomena of extent (ji-snyed-pa), those who consider themselves Svatantrikas, when they analyze with the power of reason from the collections of reasoning, they will say: 'The appearance (snang-ba) that needs to be established is not like an illusion, or that the so-called 'appearance is without inherent existence' is not established through negation, but through the realization of ultimate truth through inference (rjes-dpag) relying on a specific cause (rtags).' And those who consider themselves Prasangikas (thal-ba-pa) say: 'It is necessary to ascertain and realize the Suchness that transcends all mundane things and is free from all elaboration (spros-pa) through valid cognition, otherwise it would be as meaningless as the son of a barren woman.' These views are very popular in later Tibet, because the ultimate teachings of Madhyamaka today seem to be limited to this. This treatise considers these views to be unreasonable for two reasons: the former view contradicts the tenets of the Svatantrika school; --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
