The Mirror Clarifying the Views, Meditations, and Practices of the Great Forefathers: A Treatise on Our Own Tradition Namo Guru Padmavadzra! The secret Mantras that came to Tibet are known as the Early and Later Translations. Initially, the incarnate master spoke from his heart, and the translator translated. Later, great translators translated the tantras and scriptures, and the secret Mantras became known as the New and Old. In the noble land of India, such terms were not well known. The Early Translation's Mind Class, Illusion Class, and Sutra Class are mostly included. The Mind Class explains the nature of reality, the Illusion Class is the method of practicing the deity of Lhapa. The Sutra Class pervades all, and it was translated at a later time. The nature of reality is divided by the aspects of samsara and nirvana. The agent of samsara is none other than the alaya consciousness. The agent of nirvana is the wisdom of the alaya, and its names are: Concealed, Manifest, Ascending, and Great Perfection. The supreme method of manifesting it is not just through scripture, reasoning, or the key points of the body. It is clear in all the oral instructions of self-awareness taught by the guru and written in letters. Great Perfection has common and uncommon aspects. The former is the Paramita Vehicle, and the latter is the Unsurpassed Secret Mantra. The Nyingma school's Paramita and the three classes of tantras are not explained separately from the New Schools. In the Nyingma school, only the Unsurpassed is famous. Among them, there are Great Yoga, Subsequent Yoga, and Extremely Subsequent Yoga. Of the three yogas, Great Perfection is explained as Ati Yoga. In all nine vehicles, the view of Great Perfection is needed to eliminate the delusion of self and phenomena. Therefore, it is wrong to say that the Nyingma school does not have empowerment and meditation. The direct disciples of the incarnate master were as numerous as the stars. They completed the generation stage of the Illusion Network and other deities, and then entered Ati Yoga. To prove the signs and accomplishments of practice, it is necessary to recognize the nature of Yorsum (Tibetan: སྦྱོར་སྒྲོལ།). Yorsum is to have faith in the mudra and to fully understand it. To dissolve all phenomena into the dharmadhatu, and to accurately identify the processes of killing, reviving, and transforming. At that time, the correctness and incorrectness of Yorsum can be distinguished by the differences in conventional truth. Mudra and Yorsum are the supreme methods of the generation and completion stages of Great Perfection. Dissolution is the manifestation of the wisdom of Great Perfection, and nothing else. Even while dwelling in the wisdom of Great Perfection, it is still necessary to distinguish between right and wrong. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If one kills, the three sufferings arising from illusory appearances will never cease. Therefore, until enlightenment is attained, one should combine Dzogchen (རྫོགས་པ་ཆེན་པོ, Great Perfection) with the relative truth of correct view, and through practice, reach the end of the path. This is the teaching and the key to practice of the ancient Nyingma (སྔ་འགྱུར་བ, early translation) school of secret mantra. It is without error, may this virtue be dedicated to Samantabhadra (ཀུན་ཏུ་བཟང་པོ, All Good). Shubham! Homage to the perfect Buddha! Now, I will recount in order the questions and answers of Shertshul (ཤེར་ཚུལ, Wisdom Discipline), the holder of the scriptures: Regarding the motivation of the three actions (body, speech, and mind), since it is hatred at that time, what does the manifested action refer to? What is the obstacle to union and liberation? This is the answer to those questions: The secret mantra practitioner who understands emptiness uses attachment and hatred as the path. At that time, all the actions instigated by these (attachment and hatred) are definitely virtuous. Killing with mantras and medicine does not generate faults like poison, because its motivation is in accordance with virtue. Union and liberation refers to killing and saving, and the explanations in terms of killing and sexual misconduct. There are two situations. The first situation is a virtuous act with power and control. The second situation is that if one realizes emptiness, one can also use attachment and hatred as the path. If one does this without realization, it is forbidden by the great translator Rinchen Zangpo (རིན་ཆེན་བཟང་པོ, Precious Good). If one kills conceptual thoughts through fierce actions such as protection wheels, is it reasonable to prevent the apprehended without preventing the apprehender? The answer to this is: The sutras say 'one should kill sentient beings,' and there are two explanations for this statement: direct meaning and definitive meaning. The first refers to killing sentient beings who possess ten qualities, that is, being able to completely subdue and guide them, and this can only be done when one possesses this view. The second refers to killing the conceptual thoughts of the apprehender and the apprehended. All the actions of secret mantra arise from non-conceptual wisdom. Preventing the conceptual thought of the subject, one should know that this depends on preventing the object. This statement is the view of the logicians, which is not held by secret mantra practitioners. Without analyzing through the reasoning of Madhyamaka (དབུ་མ, Middle Way), one covers conceptual thoughts through the blessings of the holy guru, the descent of wisdom, empowerment, and the binding of the body. If it is not the vajra of wisdom that kills the conceptual thoughts of self and other, then what is it? The answer to this is that because it is relative truth and something to be abandoned, it is not desired to do so. If appearances, sounds, and all phenomena do not exist independently from one's own mind, then wouldn't all sentient beings be liberated without effort, without creation, without separation, and without effort? The answer to this is that as long as the habitual tendencies of illusion are not purified, enlightenment will not be attained. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
