In the letters sent, the first question is: 'According to the practice of the old Nyingma school, it is said that one should remain without thinking of anything in the mind. Does this mean stopping thoughts of the three times—past, present, and future—and then, without fabricating anything from whatever arises, naturally relaxing?' The second question is: 'In the teachings of the Drikung Kagyu's 'inseparability of emptiness and existence,' it is said that even in the state of Buddhahood, there is a true manifestation of suffering. Regarding this, some people quote scriptures saying that after attaining the first bhumi (level) of a Bodhisattva, one no longer experiences suffering: 'The noble ones have abandoned death, disease, and the suffering of old age, which arise from karma and afflictions; because that is absent, this is also absent.' and so on. Others say that in the state of Buddhahood, there is a manifestation of unmixed samsara, and the Manjushri Namasamgiti also says: 'Having the aspect of the Four Noble Truths.' Therefore, the teaching of 'inseparability of emptiness and existence' seems reasonable as well.' The third question is: 'If an ordinary person who has committed the five heinous crimes without interruption, without any other practice, and without purifying these obscurations, forcibly practices the Powa (transference of consciousness) technique, will he attain Buddhahood immediately after the transference, or not?' The fourth question is: 'In the song of Gyalwa Yang Gonpa, it is said: 'When the teacher of thoughts disappears, there is no result from good or bad deeds.' What is the meaning of this statement?' The fifth question is: 'It is said that reciting the Vajrasattva mantra one hundred thousand times according to the ritual will completely purify the root downfalls. Is this the ultimate meaning? If it is the ultimate meaning, then will it also purify the habitual tendencies? Is it necessary to realize the true meaning in order to purify subtle obscurations?' 'At the time when you know all the suchness and the extent of all knowable things, please keep in mind the complete and unmixed teachings.' The above is the complete and unedited content of the letter. Auspicious! Like a clear and flawless silver mirror, not only can it reflect the wonders of all knowledge, but it can also reveal the wonders of ultimate truth without distortion. I pay homage to Manjushri! Possessing great fame and an army, the ruler with discernment, diligence, and generous wisdom, I respectfully present your reply here. Next, regarding the first question, I will briefly answer the main points and explain the meaning in detail. First, it is reasonable in some cases and unreasonable in others. The so-called 'stopping thoughts of the three times,' generally speaking... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The time of viewing (Tibetan: ལྟ་བའི་ཚེ་), especially the time of Samadhi (Tibetan: མཉམ་གཞག་), and the special moment of the actual practice (Tibetan: དངོས་གཞིའི་). The so-called 'unfabricated abiding in whatever arises' generally refers to the time of post-meditation (Tibetan: རྗེས་ཐོབ་), especially the time of maintaining the continuity of viewing (Tibetan: ལྟ་བའི་རྒྱུན་སྐྱོང་). To this, the esoteric instruction school (Tibetan: མན་ངག་པ) calls it 'unfabricated relaxation' (Tibetan: མ་བཅོས་ལྷུག་པ་ཅེས་), and the Sutra school (Tibetan: སྡེ་སྣོད་པ) calls it 'post-meditation pure world' (Tibetan: རྗེས་ཐོབ་དག་པ་འཇིག་རྟེན་པ་). This meaning is in accordance with many old teachings of Sutra, Tantra, and esoteric instructions. Second, if the occasions are not distinguished, there is fault: If the occasions of conventional truth and ultimate truth are not distinguished, the occasions of conduct and view are not distinguished, the occasions of accumulating merit and wisdom are not distinguished, the occasions of hearing, thinking, and meditating are not distinguished, and the occasions of preliminary practice and actual practice are not distinguished, and if one does not pay attention to anything and accepts unfabricated abiding as the supreme Dharma, then one will fall into the Chinese monk's (Tibetan: རྒྱ་ནག་མཁན་པོ) sect called 'One Taste' (Tibetan: དཀར་པོ་གཅིག་ཐུབ་). In the previous occasions of conventional truth, etc., it is necessary to have the intention of being supported by non-objective wisdom, and to have the intention of taking refuge, generating Bodhicitta, giving alms, etc., and it is necessary to have the fabrication of acceptance and rejection. In the special occasions of ultimate truth, etc., not paying attention to anything and abiding in unfabricated relaxation is explained as the tradition of Sarahah and Nāgārjuna. Second, elaborating on the additional meaning: Later Tibetans say that this meditation without attention is the tradition of the Chinese monk. Since it does not contradict ignorance and clinging, even if it is very high, it is only a state of tranquility (Śamatha), not insight (Vipaśyanā). The definition of insight is explained in all reliable treatises as the wisdom that distinguishes individually. Therefore, spending one's life in the tradition of the Chinese monk, practicing the union of tranquility and insight and Dzogchen without attention, is actually the tradition of the Chinese monk. Even though the Sakyas verbally say that Kamalaśīla refuted the tradition of the Chinese monk, and that one should refer to the 'Ba's Testament' (Tibetan: སྦ་བཞེད་) and the 'Royal Genealogy' (Tibetan: རྒྱལ་བཞེད་), in reality, the ultimate way of abiding in their own tradition does not go beyond the tradition of the Chinese monk. This is what they say. There are two parts to this: direct refutation, and explaining one's own tradition of abiding and its additional meanings. First, if being without attention does not become the antidote to self-grasping, and if insight is pervaded by discriminating wisdom, then all yogic direct perception, especially the wisdom of the Buddha, will become not the antidote to self-grasping, nor insight.
