The reason is that the attainment of the cessation of the first dhyana (bsam gtan, concentration), its stainless and invincible nature, is the equal cause for the attainment of the cessation of the peak of existence. As it is said: 'The paths of the nine grounds, mutually, are of equality and difference.' This is the answer to the third question, divided into a summary of the essential points and an actual answer. First, the way of showing the abandonment of the two to-be-abandoned things here is not just a general statement, but it is for the sake of knowing the demarcation of the establishment of the complete knowledge of the fruit of abandonment. How is it? For the six complete knowledges of abandoning what is to be abandoned by seeing, it is necessary to abandon them with the stainless uninterrupted path. As it is said: 'The fruit of the six tolerances is explained as knowledge.' For the establishment of the complete knowledge of abandoning what is to be abandoned by meditation, it is also possible to abandon it with the worldly path. As it is said: 'The two of the worldly are explained as knowledge.' Secondly, since it is established in this way, then the things to be abandoned by seeing at the time of establishing complete knowledge are not abandoned merely by the arising of the antidote, because it is not possible to establish complete knowledge merely by abandoning what is to be abandoned by seeing with the antidote that has the aspect of peace and roughness. At the time of establishing complete knowledge, it is possible to establish the decay of what is to be abandoned by meditation with the antidote that has the aspect of peace and roughness, because when the noble ones become detached from desire and form by the worldly path, they establish the complete knowledge of abandoning the last similar part and the complete knowledge of the exhaustion of the defilements of form. How can there be detachment and stainlessness in this? As it is said: 'For those who are detached from worldly things, the noble ones have two kinds of detachment, which are explained as knowledge.' This is the answer to the fourth question, divided into a summary of the essential points and knowing the three ways of abandoning separately. First, the things to be abandoned by seeing are summarized into two categories: suffering and origin, and cessation and path to be abandoned by seeing. The first is divided into two: focusing on one's own ground and focusing on the upper ground. The two are not contradictory, because the suffering and origin to be abandoned by seeing that focus on the upper ground must focus on one's own ground because they are all pervasive. The first, focusing on one's own ground, is divided into two: being pervasive and not being pervasive. The first is the general characteristic of the defilements to be abandoned by seeing. The second is the self-characteristic of those. The second, the cessation and path to be abandoned by seeing, is divided into two. The first is the general characteristic of the defilements that have become them. The second is their self-characteristic. Thus, among these four, for the suffering and origin to be abandoned by seeing, merely by abandoning them, the complete knowledge of abandoning them is established. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It cannot be completely certain that it has been severed, because some differences between the two may lead to a situation where, even after severance, they are not completely separated. As it is said: 'Having abandoned the suffering seen by the path of seeing, one still possesses the remaining pervasive ones.' It is the same for what is to be abandoned by the path of meditation, but in the final similar part, the defilements of the form realm, and the defilements of the formless realm, severance implies separation. Similarly, whichever of the two, cessation or path, is to be abandoned by the path of seeing, severance implies separation, because for these, a system of subtle increasing pervasiveness has not been established. Second, the actual answers are shown separately. In general, all that is to be abandoned by the path of seeing needs to be abandoned after knowing the characteristics of the four noble truths, and there is no difference in this. But the three different ways of abandonment described here are based on the actual object of focus. So, how can one abandon without knowing the actual object of focus? It refers to the cases where the object of focus is the higher ground of suffering and accumulation to be abandoned by the path of seeing. What does this mean? It means that the acceptance of dharma of suffering and accumulation in the desire realm does not directly focus on the higher ground. If it were to directly focus on it, it would lead to subsequent acceptance. Also, there are cases where one cannot abandon merely by knowing the actual object of focus, which refers to the cases where the object of focus is the contaminated dharma to be abandoned by the path of cessation and the path of the path. Why is that? Because their object of focus, the contaminated dharma, can also be known by the two, acceptance of suffering and accumulation, and it is impossible for there to be contaminated dharma that they do not know. Therefore, the cases where one can abandon by fully knowing the actual object of focus are those where the object of focus is one's own ground of suffering and accumulation to be abandoned by the path of seeing, and the uncontaminated dharma to be abandoned by the path of cessation and the path of the path. For these, the cases where one can abandon merely by correctly recognizing the object of focus are those where the object of focus is the higher ground of suffering and accumulation to be abandoned by the path of seeing. So, can the nine cases where suffering and accumulation to be abandoned by the path of seeing focus on the higher ground be abandoned merely by fully knowing the actual object of focus? Because they are also subtle increasing pervasiveness that focuses on themselves. If this is admitted, then the statement 'one can abandon merely by correctly recognizing the object of focus,' the second way of abandonment, is meaningless, is it? If the former statement is admitted, then the latter statement is not necessarily true, because the nine cases where subtle increasing pervasiveness focuses on the higher ground can be abandoned merely by directly knowing the characteristics of the two truths of suffering and accumulation in the desire realm, but until the other pervasive ones that focus on the nine cases themselves are abandoned, they are still not separated, and are still possessed. Therefore, the second way of abandonment is explained in order to prove that severance and separation are simultaneous. What effect does this have? As it is said: 'Separation...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
