Generally, all statements regarding the number of years are based on the authority of the Kalachakra. The Kalachakra states: 'From this year, after six hundred years, a powerful king of men named Shambhala will appear.' Adding fire, space, ocean, etc., to the elapsed years such as Rabjung, the year of the Kula king is completely established.' And so on, in most cases, the family year is considered authoritative. Now, to explain the classification of the two systems separately: Explaining the four seasons of the world. The second part includes explaining the four seasons of the world and explaining the three times of the scriptures. The first part includes identifying the four seasons, the general reasons for the occurrence of the four seasons, and how the four continents experience the four seasons. Identifying the four seasons. The general reasons for the occurrence of the four seasons. The first point is: In the Sutra of Golden Light and medical texts, it says: 'Three months are summer, three months are known as autumn. Three are winter, and three are spring.' Summer includes the first, middle, and last months, and the same applies to other seasons, combining three months at a time, making twelve months in a year.' This fully explains the four seasons. This is actually based on the worldly people's belief that each month has thirty days, which is a rough estimate. If divided in detail, three hundred and sixty days cannot complete the four seasons, because three hundred and sixty-five days are needed to complete them. The second point is that the reasons for the occurrence of the four seasons include the way the sun's movement causes the seasons to change, and the way the moon's movement causes the seasons to be divided into twelve months. The first point is: If asked why there are four seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—in a year, it is because of the sun's movement north and south. The Commentary on the Abhidharma-kosha states: 'Due to the differences in the sun's movement, the length of days and nights changes.' The Kalachakra states: 'The sun stays in one zodiac sign, determining all times, months, and directions.' That is, the six months when the sun is in the south are winter and spring, and the six months when the sun is in the north are summer and autumn. So, how much does the sun move north and south? According to the Abhidharma-kosha, when the sun reaches the northernmost point, it travels in the center of the continent and then turns south. When it reaches the southernmost point, it reaches the end of Jambudvipa. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to the Vinaya, the sun travels outward a distance of six yojanas (a unit of distance, approximately 7 miles) plus one-eighteenth of a yojana. The Kalachakra states that when the sun reaches the southernmost point of its course, it passes beyond the Salt Sea to the beginning of the boundary of the fire-wheel (agni-cakra). Reversing from there, when it reaches the northernmost point, it goes as far as Mount Kailash. This is also said to be related to the sun's movement. Mount Kailash is synonymous with the Mukhya-dhāra-parvata (Main Axis Mountain). The distance between south and north is said to be seventy-five thousand yojanas. As the Great Commentary states: 'The seventy-five thousand from fire to the snowy mountains is a fraction of the direction traveled from south to north. That fraction of the direction is traveled in the order of six months, for those traveling north and those traveling south.' So, how much sky area does each sun manage to travel northwards? The answer is that each sun manages to relinquish a little more than four hundred and ten yojanas each day. As the commentary to the tantra states: 'Half plus eye-naga-moon (ardha-yukta-netra-nāga-candra) is relinquished day by day.' Therefore, the sum of the southern and northern journeys must total three hundred and sixty-five days. As the commentary to the tantra states: 'Thus, the number of days for both journeys becomes three hundred with sixty-five more.' So, is there a difference in the height of the sun during the two journeys? The answer is that there is a difference. When the sun reaches the northernmost point, it travels eleven thousand yojanas higher, and when it reaches the southernmost point, it travels that much lower. Each sun travels sixty yojanas and two gavyūtis (a unit of distance, approximately 2 miles) higher or lower, and the reason why the days are long or short is that it is slower when going upwards and faster when going downwards. So, if the four seasons are determined by the sun's movement, which is more important, self-rotation or wind? The answer is that determining the summer and winter of a single continent is more dependent on wind, because when the sun travels south it is winter, and when it travels north it is summer. But for each continent individually, self-rotation is more important, for example, in Jambudvipa (the southern continent), summer occurs in a place where the sound is unpleasant in winter, which is due to the sun's self-rotation. In this way, the sun rotates to the left, circling through the twelve houses, and making one revolution around the four continents, then all twelve regions experience the completion of the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
