The Collection of Instructions by the Great Paṇḍita Śākya Chokden skc20: 'The Arrangement of Seasons, An Ornament for the Wise' The Arrangement of Seasons, An Ornament for the Wise Having Praised, I Vow to Compose. The Arrangement of Seasons, An Ornament for the Wise Svasti! The Arrangement of Seasons, An Ornament for the Wise. With an immaculate head, I bow to the lotus feet of the crown jewel of speakers, the Omniscient One ( सर्वज्ञ ,sarvajña, All-knowing); and with a mind full of joy, I pay homage! Your majestic form is like a mountain of vermillion that has drunk the sunbeams of a dragon; Your melodious speech is like the celestial musician ( Gandharva ) who delights in transforming the flow of melodies; Your profound and clear mind is like a wish-fulfilling ocean where thousands of rivers rest; The captivating treasure of wisdom of Mañjuśrī (Mañjuśrī, Gentle Glory), today has come into my heart. In that delightful place where melted butter forms pools, like waves of Antaranila gems, near the tent of the wish-fulfilling tree, on the white lotus with a thousand petals and golden stamens, on the beautiful moon seat where silver drops gather. There, from above, a white umbrella pours down cool nectar, and celestial maidens, with graceful gestures, create a pavilion of fresh flowers with a thousand hands. The meditational deity (Iṣṭadevatā, Chosen deity) sits in the vajra posture, her hands engaged in playing the lute, she is the most beautiful in the minds of all, today she has come before me. Thus, having praised, I vow to compose: Even a small amount of learning, If diligently studied, can earn one the status of a scholar among many. Therefore, at the request of others, to explain the meaning of the Tripiṭaka (Tripiṭaka, Three Baskets), I will explain the terminology of the scriptures as it is. This has two parts: mainly explaining the arrangement of seasons as taught in the Vinaya and Abhidharma, and elaborating on the duration of the teachings, etc., based on that. The first part includes: the beginning of the seasons, and from where to start calculating the beginning of the year, including related implications. Based on that, understanding the division of seasons, the acceptance of summer, and the establishment of Upoṣatha (Upoṣatha, Fast day) and other rituals. The first part includes: the division of seasons in a year and their names, and the reasons for the occurrence of intercalary months and their names. The first part is further divided into: a general explanation of the names of the seasons, and a detailed explanation of the establishment of the two systems of calculation. Mainly explaining the arrangement of seasons as taught in the Vinaya and Abhidharma. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Generally speaking, listing the various classification methods: The first is, from the Dharma categories of the Vinaya and Abhidharma, there are four different situations: divided into three seasons, four seasons, five seasons, and six seasons. The first situation is that winter has four months, spring has four months, and summer has four months, each as a season. As it is said: 'The fourth of the winter months,' here winter, spring, and summer are summarized into three seasons. In the Vinaya, the division of seasons is doubled, that is, four months as the standard for one season. The purpose of saying this is that in the Vinaya, it is said this way to determine the fabric in the monastic robe. This is the view of the early teachers. In the Abhidharma, it is said this way to easily understand that the fourth month from the autumnal equinox is the winter solstice, the fourth month from the winter solstice is the vernal equinox, the fourth month from the vernal equinox is the summer solstice, and the fourth month from the summer solstice is the autumnal equinox. I think so. This is to easily understand the pattern of four months, because the transition points of each of the four seasons will have slight deviations, about three days apart. The second situation is that if the four seasons of winter, spring, summer, and autumn are divided according to months, they are divided into upper, middle, and lower three months, which is consistent with worldly sayings. The third situation is based on the three seasons, the summer is divided into one month of mid-summer, one day and night of short summer, and three months minus one day and night of long summer, divided into three situations. As it is said: 'In the Vinaya, these are divided into five types: winter, spring, summer, short summer, and mid-summer. The first two are four months, the latter is one month, the one after that is one day and night, and the last one is less than three months.' The purpose of saying this is to easily understand that short summer is like death, and the purpose of understanding this is to easily understand the recognition of the later summer. Short summer is called like death, just as consciousness does not re-enter a dead body, if the existence of the previous summer is not recognized, then after this one day and night has passed, there will be no summer in that year. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
