If conventional truth is accepted as existing in the ultimate truth, then all phenomena accepted by worldly people as ultimate truth should be like conventional truths accepted by the Madhyamikas. This is the first type of reasoning. Furthermore, if something is known as conventional truth to the Madhyamikas, then the term 'true' should not be applied to it in their system. For example, if something is known as conventional truth to the world, then that term is not applied to it in their system. To the appearance of various interdependent phenomena, the Madhyamikas only apply the term 'mere conventional truth,' but not 'true.' This is the second type of reasoning based on scripture. Furthermore, if something is known as conventional truth to either the world or the noble ones, then the Madhyamikas apply the term 'worldly conventional truth.' For example, just as the two moons appearing to someone with an eye ailment are considered true in their perception. Both the conventional truths known to the world as described in contexts such as 'disturbed by sleep,' and the conventional truths known to the noble ones as described in contexts such as 'artificial things are conventional,' are labeled by the Madhyamikas as 'worldly conventional truth.' This is the third type of reasoning. Furthermore, if something exists in the Madhyamika's own system, then it must exist inherently, because if it does, it must be established through the Madhyamika's reasoning. For example, just as things established through the reasoning of those who assert entities must be inherently established. Therefore, all conventional phenomena such as form do not exist according to the Madhyamika system, because no valid cognition in that system can establish them. This is the fourth type of reasoning. Furthermore, if something is a worldly conventional truth, it does not necessarily exist, just like the object grasped by the clinging to the inherent existence of persons and phenomena. Based on these five types of reasoning, it is certain that conventional truth does not exist in the Madhyamika's own system. So, what phenomena are accepted as existing in one's own system? And to what is the term 'true' applied? We do not accept any phenomena as existing in our own system, because we refute all characteristics. Then, shouldn't we accept that ultimate truth is established through valid cognition? When using the language of noble wisdom, we do accept it in that way. Conventional truth is also not established through valid cognition at that time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not admitting existence is a distinction here. The term 'truth' is only applied to the ultimate truth, because there is no other non-deceptive dharma. One should not think that if it is the ultimate truth, it must exist, because it must be separated from all collections of elaboration. Therefore, if it exists in name, it does not have to exist. Therefore, 'all dharmas do not exist ultimately,' this alone is ascertained as the self-nature of Madhyamaka. This is merely negating existence, not proving non-existence, because if it is proven, it goes into the characteristics of elaboration. The second part is identifying the views of permanence and annihilation, and how if one understands the above reasoning, one can naturally abandon those views. The first part is: If some conventional truths exist in the Madhyamaka's own system, then it must be admitted that it is permanent, because according to their view, if it exists, then the time when it ceases to exist can never occur. Otherwise, if something like a sprout is admitted to exist in the Madhyamaka's system, and when analyzing with reason whether it is one or many, if one admits that it does not exist, then that is admitting that emptiness is the destroyer of things. Therefore, the contaminated wisdom that clings to the existence of those things is called the view of permanence, because it is the wisdom that analyzes dharmas through reasoning famous in philosophical systems and clings to their existence. For example, like the mind that clings to the existence of true emptiness. The innate mind that clings to existence is not the view of permanence, because it is admitted by a pleasing thought that is not analyzed, but it is not admitted to exist based on the reason that it is established by a valid cognition famous in philosophical systems. If one admits that a conventional truth is established by a valid cognition famous in philosophical systems, then it necessarily follows that one admits that the conventional truth can be established by rational analysis. For example, like those who assert substance. Having thus identified the view of permanence, the second part is the view of annihilation: If a dharma established by valid cognition disappears when analyzed by reason, then it necessarily follows that it is annihilation, because something that previously existed later disappeared. For example, like the stream of a river being cut off. Therefore, that kind of wrong view is called the view of annihilation, because it is a contaminated wisdom that clings to the fact that something that previously existed later disappeared. The Madhyamaka's view that all dharmas do not exist is not the view of annihilation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
