If I am established by valid cognition, because it is a conventional truth, then the 'self' and 'Īśvara (自在天)' etc. postulated by the Tirthikas (外道) would also be established by valid cognition, because it is a conventional truth. If it were not so, then those who divide the worldly conventional truth into two types, true and false, would become unwise. Furthermore, those who say that the omniscient wisdom of the Buddha is a valid cognition for establishing conventional truth have not spoken well, because then seeing all that is conventional would become a true attainment. In short, the statement 'worldly conventional truth is established by valid cognition' is clearly refuted by both Candrakīrti (月称论师) and Jñānaśrīmitra (静命论师). As it is said in the Madhyamakāvatāra (《入中论》): 'Whatever is imagined as having a false nature, such as hair etc., due to the power of cataracts.' In the commentary, using the example of someone with cataracts seeing hair and someone without cataracts not seeing it, it is explained that those who have not separated from the veil of ignorance see the aggregates, elements, and sense bases as existing, while the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who have separated from it, see that they do not exist. Moreover, in the two truths, conventional truth is as it appears. If this is not admitted, it would entail the fault of contradicting direct perception etc. If it is thought that contradicting direct perception etc. would harm the defining characteristic, then that would be refuting the defining characteristic. Therefore, after raising the doubt that even the conventional cannot be refuted, the answer is given: 'If one has no desire for the real, what can one say about the conventional?' etc., explained extensively. Third, refuting the objection: If the Svātantrika-Madhyamikas (中观宗) do not accept the existence of conventional truth in their own system of conventions, then it would be equivalent to admitting that the Three Jewels and the Four Noble Truths do not exist, thereby falling into the extreme of nihilism. The answer to this is: The fault of falling into the extreme of nihilism lies with you, not with us. Because those who first admit the existence of conventional truth and then, after intellectual analysis, deny its existence, are the ones who fall into the extreme of nihilism. We, on the other hand, abide in the worldly conventional truth and thereby enter into the Four Noble Truths. If one's own system does not admit the existence of conventional truth, then how can one abide in it? As long as the imprints of ignorance have not been abandoned, there will always be conventional appearances. 因此,首先通过执着于相的智慧来承认世俗,然后思考中观,如果思考从所有戏论的集合中解脱的终点,那么……", "4-7-1a" ], "english_translations": [ "Therefore, regarding abandoning all aspects of the conventional, one must accept being pleasing to experience merely without analysis, without relying on any pramana (means of valid cognition). As it is said, 'The mind without virtue or non-virtue ultimately changes, and it negates even thinking about the results of actions.' Although admitting that all conventional truths are not existent, one does not admit that they are non-existent like a donkey's horn, because if one admits that, it would become a wrong view of emptiness. Therefore, although the conventional truths of the world are not known by pramana, some conventional truths of yogis and the ultimate truth are known by pramana.", "4-6-8a", "Although the meaning of understanding in that way exists in the speech of the noble ones, that existence is not the view of the Madhyamaka, because its existence is not established by any pramana. Therefore, the meaning that the conventional does not exist even in the speech of the noble ones is that it is not established by pramana there. And its meaning is that it is not analyzed by the reasoning of the noble ones. Its meaning is also that it is pleasing to experience merely without analysis. Its meaning is also that it is dependent arising. Whatever is dependent arising is said to be emptiness, because when the noble ones analyze with pramana, they do not see anything anywhere. Therefore, this statement, 'All phenomena exist conventionally, but do not exist ultimately,' distinguishes the two stages of the path to enter the great ocean of Madhyamaka. 'Existing conventionally' is the first stage, which initially reverses non-meritorious actions. Then, 'not existing ultimately' is the second stage, which reverses all views of clinging to characteristics. After that, it will become of one taste with the great ocean of definitive meaning, separated from all proliferation.", "Here it is said: When establishing conventional truth, say 'exists conventionally,' do not say 'does not exist in truth,' for if you say so, you will fall from conventional truth. When establishing definitive truth, say 'does not exist ultimately,' at that time do not say 'exists,' for if you say so, you will fall from definitive meaning. If the two ways of establishing conventional and ultimate are proven by the pramana of the noble ones, then there will be a non-deceptive pramana in contradiction.
