Collection of Instructions by the Great Scholar Shakya Chokden skc10, including 'Entering the Essence of the Two Truths: Nectar Drops' and other Madhyamaka teachings. The Gate of Engaging in Conduct by Acknowledging the Conventional Truth Svasti praja bhyah! The youthful radiance of the unyielding moon, In the heart's cool ocean of nectar, The garland of lotuses that brightly blooms, I offer with reverence and prostrate. Having thus begun with prostration, following the treatises of Chandrakirti, let us open the two great gates to enter the great mansion of definitive meaning. What are the two? They are the gate of engaging in conduct by acknowledging the conventional truth, and the gate of engaging in view by acknowledging the ultimate truth. The first is to acknowledge as it is known in the world. However, 'people of the world' does not only refer to ordinary individuals, but to all those who have not yet removed the imprints of ignorance, and whose minds, born together with the force of ignorance, grasp at appearances. This mind that acknowledges the first truth should be taken as the main basis for explanation. For worldly people, what appears in the mind is twofold: false appearances and correct appearances. The first are those that appear to consciousnesses tainted by temporary causes of delusion, such as the hairs and double moons that appear to deluded sense consciousnesses, and the fabrications of deluded mental consciousnesses tainted by bad philosophies, such as the self and the four extremes of birth. The second are those that appear to consciousnesses born together due to the power of ignorance, without relying on being tainted by causes of delusion, such as the five external objects that appear to sense consciousnesses, and the 'I' that is the object grasped by the co-emergent self-grasping of mental consciousness, as well as the sprout being established by its own nature and being born by its own nature. These two types of falsehood are, in order, called the conventional truth and the ultimate truth in relation to the world. However, of these two, the first is not even acknowledged as existing by the world itself, because it does not exist but appears falsely due to the power of delusion. The second is acknowledged as existing in this system, because those things are the ultimate truth of that system. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, in the 'Self-Commentary on the Two Truths', a sutra is quoted: 'Whatever is done as the ultimate truth by others, is considered the conventional truth by others. Whatever is made into butter by others, is considered the wife of others.' This statement is also intended to illustrate this very principle. After explaining it this way, the two selves posited by philosophical tenets are not even established in the world, because worldly people also acknowledge conventional truth. The two selves posited by innate ignorance must be acknowledged as existing in dependence on the world itself, because worldly people acknowledge them as ultimate truth. The point established by explaining it this way is that what worldly people establish as ultimate truth is innate ignorance, and what noble ones establish as ultimate truth is wisdom. Both the ultimate truth of the world and that which is established as true in its own way are called the conventional truth of the world in the language of the noble ones, because in their respective cognitive levels, both are equally true, and in the level of wisdom, both are equally untrue. Therefore, there is no difference in terms of existence or non-existence in name for these two. In short, if something is named as 'accurate conventional truth' in the language of the noble ones and is acknowledged as ultimate truth by worldly people, then it must exist in the world, like a chariot. Similarly, the 'self' that is the object of grasping by the innate self-grasping can also be said to be 'that very one', which is logical. So, who acknowledges the tenet that 'a chariot exists, but a self does not'? It is the substantialists of our own school, not the view of the Madhyamaka school itself, because in the Madhyamaka view, both are equally non-existent. Those who do not understand the increasingly superior differences between worldly customs and the tenets of the Buddha in the way of establishing things like self and chariot, but claim to be wise men of the snowy land, say: 'What worldly people acknowledge is the view of the Madhyamaka school.' Or they say: 'When establishing worldly conventional truth, I say that the self exists, but it is not truly existent.' Or they say: 'The self that serves as the basis for karma and its results exists, but the self of the person does not exist.' These people should take a little effort to look with the eyes of wisdom at the white rays of light well explained by Chandrakirti, and not be so laborious. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
