Since beginningless time, beings have increased the habit of malice. Therefore, without effort, the mind that delights in destroying others arises. Due to the power of this malice, even without intentionally thinking, one engages in the act of destroying others. Even for the sake of amusement, one harms sentient beings. Like this, while the mind is distracted, one cuts down trees and grass. One destroys piles of stones and the like. One destroys forms that resemble sentient beings. One renders seeds incapable of growing. One kills lice and the like for pleasure. If one separates living beings from their lives, how can compassion arise? Such habits lead one to all the bad places, such as hell. Therefore, in order to abandon and restrain the habit of malice, and in order to increase the seed of compassion, even householders, except for actions motivated by the thought of benefiting sentient beings belonging to their own and others' continuums, should make vows to abandon the actions of body and speech motivated by the habit of malice due to carelessness, as well as the destruction of limbs and the destruction of seeds. The so-called destruction of limbs refers to the forms of the vessel world, even those that are not sentient beings, whether they resemble sentient beings or not. If they resemble the body of sentient beings, then it is even more inappropriate. Even if they do not resemble them, one should not destroy stones, mounds of earth, holes in the ground, trees, grass, and the like. The so-called non-destruction of species refers to substances that can be used as seeds, such as fruits, saplings, and seedlings, destroying them with weapons, burning them with fire, smearing them with medicine, and causing them to rot. Such actions increase the seed of malice and separate one from compassion. Therefore, one should make vows to abandon these actions. Regarding abandoning miserliness, it is not forbidden for those in the prime of youth to wear ornaments, for armies to be arrayed in times of Dharma warfare, for fields to be oppressed by noise, and for the elderly and infirm to accumulate wealth out of fear of afflictions. In the case of malice, in order to subdue the enemies of the Buddhas, to cut and burn the linga (लिङ्ग,liṅga,linga,林伽) with weapons, and...

Things like aversion are not merely born from the habitual tendencies of aversion. Because the vows are precisely what must be specially guarded in order to protect the excellent Dharma, one should not be careless about this. (The phrase "do not fully possess habitual tendencies" which appears in the Dzogchen edition, is a typographical error.) The four root downfalls that arise from the Pratimoksha vows, and the precepts such as the five bases of training of the Mahayana, and also the precepts that begin with guarding the four root downfalls common to both the characteristics and secret mantra Mahayana, are complete. The four root downfalls that are specifically taught in the secret mantra Vajrayana are as follows: namely, from the heart, cursing the body of the Vajra Master; abandoning the Vajra Bodhicitta forever; denigrating the Dharma of equality; and quarreling with Vajra siblings. These are intolerable downfalls that even the deeds of immediate retribution cannot approach. Conversely, not abandoning the Vajra Bodhicitta, taking the Dharma of equality as primary, mainly meditating on the samadhi that realizes body, speech, and mind as being like a vajra, and not having doubts about the meaning and words of the Dharma of equality, because it is included in the general meaning, no additional precepts were made. In order to protect the vajra fence of the Vajra Master and the Vajra sisters, eight precepts that are the opposite of what should not be done have been made. In order to enter the chain of vows, three precepts have been made. The so-called vajra fence refers to the Vajra Master and the Dharma friends having the same view and vows, being harmonious internally, getting along well, being friendly, and acting without harboring grudges. Its fence is these eight. What are they? One, not mixing vows with people with the five stains. Two, not performing a tsok offering that possesses the four kinds of impurity. Three, among those who have vows, not engaging in Dharma debates like a peacock catching a snake, due to being arrogant with wisdom and learning. Four, not hoisting one's own conceptual thoughts as a banner, and not leading the instructions of the Lama and wise friends around like a dog. Five, not disciplining disciples and friends with the methods of training dogs. The master should not banish disciples or divide them into factions.
