It is like this, it is only that it has not arisen. Is it the kalpa-ending hungry ghost in terms of its nature, or the kalpa-ending Brahma in terms of its place? It is not like the kalpa-ending in time existing elsewhere because it is not here. If we combine pervasion and contradiction: a tree pervades a deer, but a deer does not pervade a tree. Fire pervades smoke, but smoke does not pervade fire. A seed pervades a sprout, but a sprout does not pervade a seed. Impermanence pervades what is made, but what is made does not pervade impermanence. The ultimate truth of designation pervades the valid conventional truth, but the valid conventional truth does not pervade the ultimate truth of designation. If the ultimate truth of designation ceases, then the valid conventional truth will also cease. If the valid conventional truth ceases, then the ultimate truth of designation is not necessarily ceased. Furthermore, in the state of the wisdom of the noble ones, there is the ultimate truth of designation. Like this, from the above examination, we can also know that if we refute the subject, because the reason, smoke, appears, therefore the dharma to be established is the existence of fire, the similar example is like a kitchen, and the dissimilar example is not like water vapor. The reason for these things that are the subject is: because it is made, therefore it is impermanent, the similar example is like a potter, and the dissimilar example is not like space. Having explained the reason in this way, the non-Buddhists believe that the self (pudgala) is permanent, the Hearers believe that the subtle particles are truly existent, and the Mind-Only school believes that the mind is ultimately existent. These examinations want to be established by the seven-membered syllogism, the seven members are: the general pervasion, the subject, the reason, the dharma to be established, the similar example, the dissimilar example, and the inclusion of the dharma in the subject. After the general pervasion that applies in any place, the non-Buddhists place the permanent self as the subject, the reason cannot function simultaneously, nor can it function gradually, therefore there is no nature of the dharma to be established, the similar example is like a rabbit's horn or the child of a barren woman. The dissimilar example is completely different from illusion. The inclusion of the dharma in the subject, in general, the permanent self of the non-Buddhists has not arisen. Again, after the pervasion that applies in any place, the subtle particles of the Hearers are placed as the subject, if we measure the dharma of the subject with the reason, then there is no nature of the dharma to be established, the similar

Similar examples are like pillars. Dissimilar examples are completely different from feelings. For sects, all these collections of dharmas have not established the subtle particles of the Hearers. Also, no matter where, generally speaking, the Mind-Only school posits that mind is ultimately existent, as the subject to be proven, using the four refutations of the Middle Way, and the fourfold negation of arising and ceasing, and the separation from one and many to establish selflessness. Similar examples are like illusions. Dissimilar examples are completely different, like rabbit horns or the son of a barren woman. For sects, all these collections of dharmas establish that the mind of the Mind-Only school is without self-nature. The ultimate truth without elaboration is the one that is free from the eight extremes of elaboration. If truth is true for whom? Conventional truth is true for ordinary people or those who are deluded. Ultimate truth is true for the wisdom of the noble ones. If the nature of phenomena were something existent, then since the Tathagata has realized it, he should see some things, but since he has not seen even a particle of a thing, things do not exist. Then what is the difference between these two? The ultimate truth of name wants to prevent the arising of sentient beings' aggregates. It does not want to prevent the true conventional truth, so there is a difference. The four great reasons for the non-arising of phenomena are: the four refutations of the Middle Way, and the separation from one and many, and the fourfold negation of arising and ceasing, and dependent origination. The four refutations of the Middle Way are: not arising from oneself, not arising from others, not arising from both, not arising from no cause. Whatever things arise, they will never arise. Thus it is said. Not arising from oneself, this is one. Not arising from others, this is the second. Not arising from both, this is the third. Not arising from no cause, this is the fourth. The Great Vehicle scriptures say this, but the heretics say: it arises from oneself, it also arises from others, it also arises from both, it also arises from no cause. Thus they say. Among them, arising from oneself means: the self, the lord of all bodies, is called sentient being. The self, this permanent one, is perfumed by the three habits of dust, darkness, and vigor, and these three equally become the cause of all dharmas. Because all sentient beings are born from it, it also arises from oneself. Other
