It is said thus. Dependent arising is explained through four aspects: What are they? Namely, the definitive word, the self-nature, the divisions, and what function it performs. Among these, the definitive word is: it arises with cause and with condition; because it does not arise without cause and without condition, it is called dependent arising. The self-nature is: external dependent arising and internal dependent arising. Among these, external dependent arising is also divided into cause and connection, and condition and connection. Cause and connection is: from the sprouting of a seed to the bearing of fruit from a flower, the six dharmas that depend on the cause. Condition and connection is: from the aggregation of the six elements, the fruit is ripened; these are the four great elements, time, and the element of space, making six. Internal dependent arising is also divided into cause and connection, and condition and connection. Among these, cause and connection is: from ignorance to old age and death. Condition and connection is: from the aggregation of the six elements, the fruit arises. The divisions are sixfold: the characteristic, the function, the division of limbs, the gathering of genus, the teaching that samsara has no beginning and no end, and the teaching that it has three parts. Among these, the characteristic also has five aspects: the self-characteristic, the characteristic of the definitive word, the characteristic of connecting the limbs, the characteristic of gathering the causes, and the characteristic of being separate from the two extremes. Among these, the self-characteristic is: the characteristic of ignorance is unknowing; being deluded about the meaning of cause, effect, and suchness is ignorance. Similarly, for the remaining ones, each is explained by applying its own self-characteristic. The characteristic of the definitive word is: why is it called ignorance? Because it is a great darkness, it is called ignorance. For example, if an object is placed in a dark room, it is not that the object does not exist, but because of the darkness, the object is not seen. Similarly, it is not that the true suchness does not exist, but because of ignorance, the true suchness is not seen, therefore it is called ignorance. Similarly, the remaining ones also each have a definitive word. The characteristic of connecting the limbs
