Because it is also absent in direct perception and inference. Then, what is the necessity of establishing reason? It is because for those with dull faculties, reason itself must be established first, and then it must be used to measure the meaning. Because of the subject, the to-be-proven, and the example being combined, and the pervasion and counter-pervasion being certain, it is for the sake of those who need to establish these. Again, it is asked: Some people are accomplished by just that much, but for some, even by the reason of establishing reason, it is not accomplished, therefore they will not believe, please establish it. Answer: First, it should be established by the scripture that is established in both, as it is said in the Sutra of the Ornament of Wisdom Light: The ever-lasting unborn Dharma is the Tathagata. All Dharmas are similar to the Sugata. Those with childish minds who grasp at characteristics, practice Dharma that does not exist in the world. Thus it is said. Among them, the ever-lasting unborn Dharma is the Tathagata, this is the reason. All Dharmas, this is the subject. Similar to the Sugata, this is the example. The to-be-proven is, all Dharmas are the Tathagata, this is what is to be established. Then, will the measure of direct perception harm it? Those with childish minds who grasp at characteristics, practice Dharma that does not exist in the world. Thus it is said. Just as children who are not familiar with terms grasp at the shimmering hair, and enjoy the fire wheel and generate joy, likewise, the objects of experience measured by the deluded consciousness of each ordinary person, the enjoyment of grasping at characteristics, is merely enjoying non-existent Dharma. Therefore, it should be established like this: All Dharmas are the Tathagata, because the ever-lasting unborn Dharma is the Tathagata. For example, it is similar to the Sugata of the three times. How is it similar? The Sugata is not distinguished by body, speech, and mind, but is distinguished by the nature of Dharma, like this, what is distinguished by the unconditioned is the noble person. Thus it is said. Similarly, just as the noble ones obtain the state of nobility by obtaining the unconditioned, similarly, all Dharmas become the Tathagata by obtaining the nature of the unconditioned. The object of characteristics is not like that, because it is not like that.
