Having the ability to transfer the blessings of the Guru's mind, the intermediate is as it is said: "Stable and gentle, with great wisdom, Patient, upright, and without deceit, Knowing the union of mantra and tantra, Possessing compassion and skilled in treatises, Fully knowing the ten suchnesses, Skilled in the work of drawing mandalas, Knowing the practice of explaining mantras, Extremely pure and with subdued senses." As stated in the "Fifty Verses on the Guru," and furthermore, possessing the complete qualities as described in the sutras, tantras, and treatises of both the old and new traditions, praised and extolled by the noble beings, masters of qualities, one should rely on those who have closely served. Furthermore, the source of the lineage should not be confused, not interrupted by the defilement of broken vows, having properly received empowerment and completed the retreat that can be worked with, having obtained any sign of heat, being skilled and unerring in performing the rituals of empowerment and mandala, possessing the samadhi of the two stages, diligently practicing the conduct of the holy ones, being compassionate, broad-minded, and possessing peace and gentleness is essential. To rely on the opposite of these is not appropriate, and one should never take the place of a teacher oneself; this is not something to be done. Third, examining the vessel of the listener, the disciple: In general, being free from the thirty-six faults and possessing the thirty-six qualities, or at least following the true Buddha, the teacher, diligently respecting all that should be learned, with wisdom that is not inverted, having firm faith in the Dharma, the lineage, and the teacher, not fearing the profound secret places, having great patience, without arrogance, being grateful, diligent, seeking only the true meaning, being able to offer whatever one has as offerings for the mandala, not abandoning the Vajra Guru even at the cost of one's life, being able to protect the essence of the vows of body, speech, and mind, not stealing the profound Dharma through cunning and deceit, not for the sake of challenging or testing, but having faith, and practicing the profound stages of generation and completion to the best of one's ability, is essential. Fourth, how to engage in the practical application of teaching and listening.
