It is like water on a steep mountain. Then, it becomes slightly clearer, and if the deity's form and color appear clearly at the same time, that is the experience of attainment, like a pond. When it appears so clearly, it is clear no matter where you meditate, whether near or far, and if you can maintain it for about one-third of the session and coarse thoughts do not move, that is the experience of familiarity, like a river. Thus, when you can maintain the deity's clarity without obscuring thoughts, that is the experience of stability, like Mount Meru. Then, from the deity's body, from the pores down to the hands and feet, it appears clearly and brightly, and without distracting thoughts, you can maintain it for up to half a day, that is the experience of completion. Also, yogis should combine it with their own experience. If the deity is not clear for a long time, it will disturb the body, become annoying, meditation will not increase, and thoughts will increase again. In general, it is important to have clarity in short sessions. Meditate on the sun and lamps, etc., which have appearances. Do not meditate when you have just woken up, are drunk, or are blurry. At night, sleep well, and during the day, meditate in eight small sessions. If you stop meditating, the samadhi will disappear if you stop suddenly, so stop slowly in a clear state. If it appears clearly as soon as you start meditating, meditate at night in the early evening and at dawn. In general, as long as you are not annoyed, focus on what appears clearly, and when it becomes stable, clearly manifest the complete body. Jomo asked the teacher: How should I practice to maintain the deity's clear appearance for a long or short time? The teacher said: That is, after obtaining the clear appearance as above, make it slightly stable and maintain it for a long time. Recitation and sessions are: the length of a breath. External sessions are calculated in hours. One day's sessions can also be divided into four sessions, which can be taken during the day or night as appropriate. The necessity of sessions is: not disturbing the body, grasping the measure of meditation, increasing samadhi, and being able to maintain it for a long time. Do not count the number with your mouth, but hold the rosary with your mind. Then gradually increase it, and do not rest until you reach that number. Meditate up to that number. The measure of shadows is: it is said that one day should be divided into six, sixteen, or eight sessions. Meditate until each part of the shadow has passed. Rest for that amount of time. In short, know that meditating for eight sessions and resting for eight sessions are done alternately.

Thus it should be done. Then, extend both the stable and short sessions twice each to practice. After that, one can abide for durations such as a day, a night, half a month, and so on. In short, no matter what the session is like, do not be weary, but gradually extend the time in a state that is clear, without thought, and non-distracting. This is the pith instruction for making the deity clear and lasting. Jomo asked the master: How should one remedy the faults of alteration that occur in deity practice? The master instructed: There are two aspects to this: recognizing the faults and the methods of remedy. Recognizing the faults is twofold: general faults and specific faults. First, among the general faults are: forgetting the object of focus, laziness, doubt, dullness, excitement, effort, and non-effort. Among these, forgetting the object of focus is distraction during practice. Laziness is settling into mediocrity. Doubt is the fear of falling into error. Dullness is dullness caused by circumstances and inherent dullness. Excitement is inherent excitement, excitement caused by circumstances, and deliberately created excitement. Effort is when the deity is already clear, but one is not satisfied and continues to try to make it clearer, which in turn gives rise to conceptual thoughts. Non-effort is not abandoning the deity but lacking the intention to practice. Second, the specific faults are: when practicing the deity, there are faults such as blurriness, inversion of beginning and end, appearance of shadows, changes in the size of the body, changes in attire, changes in shape, changes in number, changes in posture, changes in body color, appearance of only color, appearance of only shape, lying sideways, gradual disappearance, and twelve faults in total. The master said: Regarding this, the method for remedying these faults is taught: For the seven general faults, rely on the eightfold antidote of abandonment: For forgetting the object of focus, rely on mindfulness. For laziness, rely on faith and diligence as antidotes. For doubt, rely on non-conceptualization as an antidote. For dullness, generate vigor, bathe, and straighten the body. If there is excitement, generate renunciation of samsara. Bind the mind with the rope of mindfulness and attach it to the trunk of the object of focus. In short, for dullness and excitement, rely on the guard of awareness. If you want to make effort, rely on equanimity. If you do not make effort, then clarify it with diligence. The remedy for the specific faults of the deity is, for the three situations of blurriness, dimness, and appearance like a shadow, practice emptiness and non-conceptualization.
