Possessing three kinds of views: First, believing that since samsara is without beginning, one should start learning from now on; Second, thinking that gods of other religions etc. are not the objects of refuge for oneself; Third, believing that only the Buddha who knows everything is the supreme object of refuge for oneself. Common refuge is at the time of arising. Taking refuge should not be careless; it should not be like empty words, not knowing where to go. Then, in what way or method does one take refuge? One takes refuge through the three doors: fearing the lower realms and samsara; believing in the blessings of the Three Jewels; taking refuge with unwavering faith and compassion. Generally, those who want this life to be square and stable, and the next life to be square and stable as well, their Dharma will gradually disappear and never return. At this time, one should understand the ritual of taking refuge. With what kind of intention does one take refuge? One takes refuge with the intention of accomplishing the benefit of others: merely wishing to be free from samsara and attain the fruit of nirvana is not enough to realize complete perfect enlightenment. In order to liberate all sentient beings from the suffering of samsara, one makes the vow that oneself and all sentient beings of the three realms will take refuge until they attain the state of enlightenment. Generally, all desires are desires of dualistic grasping. Taking refuge without abandoning dualistic grasping will not be effective. Jomo asked the Acharya: How many precepts should be learned for external refuge? The Acharya replied: In order to prevent the refuge from being lost after taking it, one should skillfully learn the eight precepts. Jomo asked: What are the eight precepts? The Acharya replied: First, there are three special precepts: after taking refuge in the Buddha, do not prostrate to other gods; after taking refuge in the Dharma, abandon harming sentient beings; after taking refuge in the Sangha, do not associate with non-Buddhists. Among them, taking refuge in the Buddha and not prostrating to other gods means: if one prostrates to worldly gods such as Kumaras, Vishnu, and Maheshvara, one will break the refuge. If one takes refuge in them, the refuge of...
