Like poison, it must be discarded. When the antidote of wisdom arises, it must be cherished in the continuum like the apple of one's eye. When cutting through the doubts of listening and contemplating, one must rely on the lama with the suppleness of a vine. If seeking worldly affairs, one must be stubborn like a yak, not conforming to the appearances of others. When applying the four immeasurables to the continuum, one must have the patience of a domestic sheep, equanimously treating all without bias. If a scholar comes to debate, one must cut through anything without obstruction with wisdom like the weapon of a hero. When seeking meaning through thought, one must tame sinking and excitement like taming a wild horse. When applying practice to the continuum, one must abandon worldly affairs as if a single son has come of age. If one wishes to quickly attain Buddhahood, one must constantly observe oneself with the conduct of a new bride, it is said. Again, the sovereign asked: It is very difficult to practice in this way. Are there people who practice the Dharma properly? The teacher said: If one practices the Dharma, there are also many who naturally possess qualities in their continuum. What are they like? He asked. The teacher replied: If one is cheerful and speaks gently, one has the quality of easily generating loving-kindness in the continuum. If one has strong feelings and many thoughts, one has the quality of easily generating faith suddenly. If one is of noble birth and has a sense of shame, one has the quality of not turning away from the Dharma. If one has much suffering and many obstacles, one has the quality of easily developing faith in the Dharma. If one is upright and has a good heart, one has the quality of overcoming obstacles with patience. If one has a serious expression and cares for relatives, one has the quality of great service to the lama. If one takes little interest in worldly gains and fame, one has the quality of not being biased towards the Dharma. If one has few demands in worldly affairs, one has the quality of having little attachment to the Dharma. If words are followed by meaning, one has the quality of being in harmony with the Dharma and practitioners. If one has great perseverance and determination, one has the quality of good practice of the Dharma. If one has a smiling face and upright conduct, one has the quality of pure samaya with fellow practitioners. If one has little attachment and frank conduct, one has the quality of forcibly cutting off one's own thoughts. It is also necessary that it does not become a fault. A person who is cheerful and speaks gently has the fault of being very deceitful. A person who has strong feelings and many thoughts has the fault of turning away from the Dharma. A person who is of noble birth and has a sense of shame has the fault of not abandoning worldly affai

There are shortcomings. When there is much suffering and many obstacles, there is the shortcoming of wanting to practice Dharma but not having the time. If one is too upright and has a good nature, there is the shortcoming of having little understanding of the Dharma. If one is always taking care of relatives, there is the shortcoming of not being able to sever ties with worldly affairs. If worldly affairs bring little profit and fame, there is the shortcoming of not being close to the Dharma. If one is not skilled in worldly affairs, there is the shortcoming of not being able to complete the Dharma. If attachment and hatred are great, there is the shortcoming of finding it difficult to abandon desire. If words are not followed by actions, there is the shortcoming of harsh words leading to conflict. If one always smiles and behaves improperly, there is the shortcoming of being hypocritical and liking women. If astrology is not accurate and behavior is rough, there is the shortcoming of not respecting Dharma practice and not fearing karmic consequences. Therefore, those who enter the Dharma gate, if they abandon these shortcomings and possess virtues, there will be no difficulty in practicing Dharma, (the Buddha) said. Again, (someone) asked the lord: Is there a situation where one practices Dharma but it does not become Dharma? The teacher replied: There are many who enter the Dharma gate but do not become Dharma, so one must avoid becoming like that. That is to say, even if one is ordained, if one's livelihood and possessions are the same as those of a householder, one is not a practitioner. Even if one gives up worldly affairs, if one does not abandon meaningless idle talk, one is not a practitioner. Even if one lives in a monastery, if one's actions are the same as those of worldly people, one is not a practitioner. Even if one leaves one's homeland, if one does not abandon association with worldly people, one is not a practitioner. Even if one engages in practice, if one's mind has not turned away from desire, one is not a practitioner. Even if one performs various austerities, if one cannot tolerate harm from others, one is not a practitioner. Even if one practices the generation stage and completion stage, if one does not keep vows, one is not a practitioner. Even if one practices non-duality, if one still hopes for benefit or harm from gods and demons, one is not a practitioner. Even if one enters the Mahayana, if one does not strive to benefit sentient beings, one is not a practitioner. Even if one benefits sentient beings, if it is not accompanied by bodhicitta and one has not separated from selfish desires, one is not a practitioner. Even if one realizes the view, if one does not fear karmic consequences, one is not a practitioner. Even if one knows the nine vehicles of Dharma, if one's own mind is not integrated with the Dharma, one is not a practitioner. Even if one always meditates single-pointedly, if the clinging to the reality of appearances has not disappeared, one is not a practitioner. Even if one possesses the three trainings, if one acts with arrogance as the goal, one is not a practitioner. Whatever virtuous deeds one does, if it is not accompanied by the three aspects of preparation, main practice, and conclusion, one is not a practitioner. Even if the actions of body and speech are good and natural, the mind...
