It is meaningless to do meaningless things! Turning away from the Dharma that brings happiness in this life and the next, and indulging in family life, is meaningless! Having committed sinful deeds, it is certain to fall into the lower realms, yet not fearing the karmic consequences is meaningless! Unable to endure even a spark of fire now, yet hoping to endure the suffering of the hot hells is meaningless! Unable to endure even one night of cold in winter, yet hoping to endure the suffering of the cold hells is meaningless! Unable to endure even three days of hunger and thirst, yet hoping to endure the suffering of the pretas is meaningless! Unable to endure even a slight inconvenience in one's own possessions, yet hoping to endure the various sufferings of animals is meaningless! At this time when one needs to give oneself advice, not even listening to what the lama says is meaningless! At this time when one has gained one's own freedom, being a slave to desires is meaningless! Not practicing the Dharma even for a moment, yet hoping that the next life will be just as comfortable is meaningless! Since birth and death are inevitable and accompanied by innate habits, yet leisurely planning for next year is meaningless! Now, at this time when there is freedom to go up or down, not entering the path of liberation is meaningless! In samsara, no matter what one does, one cannot escape suffering, yet not abandoning one's actions is meaningless! In the endless cycle of samsara, now just beginning to wander, yet lying to oneself, all of this is meaningless! Those who possess a human body but harbor the thoughts of cattle and horses, I will bring a lawsuit against you, he said. The lord asked: Great Teacher! Then, how should one practice the Dharma properly? The teacher replied: Lord, those who sincerely practice the Dharma should do this: With unwavering faith like a flowing river, rely on the lama and the Three Jewels; with loving-kindness and compassion like a mother and child, tame disciples and all beings; with power and strength like a thunderbolt, subdue the enemies of the teachings; with diligence without laziness like hair on fire, purify the virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind; with the meticulousness of sifting flour, abandon all non-virtuous actions; restrain the mind of jealousy towards those in high positions, and befriend virtuous people; with the eyes of guarding vows, maintain shame and embarrassment towards the deities and lamas; the measure of patience is within oneself, do not harm others.

No matter how you behave, transform your body and speech into Dharma without being separated from meaning; do not always count other people's faults, but expose your own faults; show the direct meaning and the ultimate meaning as appropriate, so that those with faith enter the Dharma; the death of others is like being abandoned yourself, so be careful and cautious; do not always do too many things, but relax your body and mind; put profound teachings in your heart and maintain recognition; even if life is poor, do not seek food and wealth by deception; if lust arises in your mind, do not be afraid of invisible obstacles; even if the king's law is strict, do not do things that harm sentient beings; because you do not know if you will die tomorrow or the day after, seize the stronghold of your own mind; seek a qualified lama and carry him on your head at all three times; because you do not know what you will need in life, study all five sciences; because it is the root of demons, do not be arrogant no matter what qualities you have; because it is the source of happiness, always go to solitary places; because both this life and the next are painful, do not do evil household affairs; vulgar behavior is influenced by friends, so associate with holy people; until you have realized it through meditation, do not treat others with harsh behavior; because it is the iron chain of samsara, abandon sectarianism and grasping; because you will be scolded by the wise, do not pretend and quarrel; because bad behavior spreads quickly, do not stay in vulgar crowds; because everything is an illusion, do not trust in contrived Dharma practices; because the Buddha is not elsewhere, determine your own mind; doing so is accepting the teachings of Shakyamuni, he said. The teacher said: If you practice Dharma sincerely, you must guard vows like the earth, as the foundation of Dharma; you must perfect all vehicles of tenets in the state of view like the sky; distinguishing like a rainbow, all Dharmas must appear clearly and without confusion in your mind; distinguishing the order like peeling bark, you must guide those who are destined; treat the teachings respectfully like a pen, you must cherish and nurture students; be as bright as summer flowers, you must clearly recognize through meditation; like a doctor's medicine box, you must hold the teachings without bias and give them when needed; you need an experience that is as moderate as salt; you must cut off the occurrence of misfortune with behavior like a wild yak being driven into the depths of a valley; when encountering afflictions that should be abandoned, hate them like enemies.
