If afflictions become self-perpetuating, then one is not a practitioner. If one neglects practices that can be done now and only hopes for future prayers, then one is not a practitioner. If one does not recognize one's own mind essence and expects results in the future, then one is not a practitioner. Even if one performs virtuous deeds, if one is not free from the eight worldly concerns, then one is not a practitioner. Great ruler, the eight worldly concerns are: being happy when praised, being unhappy when criticized, being happy when famous, being unhappy when unknown, being happy when hearing pleasant things, being unhappy when hearing unpleasant things, being happy when gaining, and being unhappy when not gaining. These are all. So, have I, with my body, speech, and mind, committed or not committed any roots of non-virtue with these thoughts in the past? Am I doing them now, or not? Will I do them in the future with these eight attitudes? Examine carefully! It is very important to be free from these! Great ruler! If Padma follows me, no matter what Dharma you practice, practice the undeluded path that quickly attains the great enlightenment of the Buddha! Practice with vast and profound meaning! Practice with all the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha! Practice the meaning of the nine vehicles in complete fullness, ascending in the continuum of one person! Practice with the understanding that neither the object of practice nor the practitioner are established! Practice all phenomena of samsara and nirvana in the state of the single sphere of the Dharmakaya! Practice according to this, my instruction alone! Have no doubt about the fruit of enlightenment! Thus he spoke. Then, the ruler was very pleased and made countless prostrations! He greatly rejoiced and praised! The instructions of Guru Padmasambhava to the ruler, scattered oral instructions on practice. At that time, it was written down. Later, it was hidden as a precious treasure. Treasure seal! Hidden seal! Entrusted seal! Homage! To the master of Oddiyana, Padmasambhava, who actually came as an emanation body, Jomo Kharchenza Tsoyal asked: Great master! The basis of all Dharmas, the method to exhaust birth and death, the method that requires little effort but has great benefit, the method that is easy to do but requires little effort, please bestow it upon me! The master, the emanation body, said: Tsoyal, the basis of all Dharmas is refuge, the support of all Dharmas is the Three Jewels.

These are the supreme Three Jewels. It is said that the method to exhaust birth and death is refuge, complete with its branches. Jo Mo asked: What is the essence of refuge? What is its defining word? How many types are there? The master replied: The essence of refuge is: desiring unsurpassed enlightenment and promising compassion. The defining word is: because it protects from the fear of the three lower realms and the inferior destructive views of non-Buddhists, etc., it is refuge. The types are: outer refuge, inner refuge, and secret refuge, these three. Jo Mo asked: For outer refuge, what is the cause for generating refuge? Where does one take refuge? Who takes refuge? How does one take refuge in terms of method or means? With what kind of intention does one take refuge? Master Padmasambhava replied: The cause for generating refuge is fear of the suffering of samsara, and having faith in the Three Jewels as refuge, and also holding these Three Jewels as the place of refuge, with these three, refuge is generated. Originally, if one fears death, refuge will arise, but there are many people who do not realize that half of their lives have been exhausted, and do not remember the next life even for a moment, refuge will not arise in such people. If one does not die, then refuge is not needed. Even if one is reborn as a human after death, it is not needed, because in the bardo of death, one will not be able to bear the suffering of the lower realms. Where does one take refuge? One takes refuge in the Three Jewels, if there is any method that can exhaust birth and death? Because the Buddha, who knows all aspects, is free from all faults and perfects all qualities, therefore, his teachings and the Sangha who uphold his teachings can exhaust the birth and death of oneself and others. This is the only place of refuge, therefore one should take refuge in this. Originally, one should not regard the words of the perfectly enlightened Buddha as merely the words of a witch. If one encounters misfortune, many people will take refuge in ghosts and demons, refuge is very difficult. Who takes refuge? One who has faith, respect, and devotion, and remembers the qualities of the Three Jewels can take refuge, and there are also differences.
