Pages 179 to 278. Pages 179 to 278. The foremost part of the collected teachings of the great master, the incarnate Padmasambhava. This Dharma is the essence of practice, so please keep it in your heart, may it be auspicious! Emaho! Master Padmasambhava, King Trisong Detsen invited you to tame the ground of Samye (built between 767-797 AD). After requesting the construction of the glorious Samye Monastery, which was spontaneously accomplished, and at the time of the consecration ceremony, the master was invited to the upper main hall, seated on a silk throne, and draped with a purple silk robe. Golden and silver cups were filled with fine wine and placed in his right and left hands. Various worldly offerings were presented, and a golden mandala, one cubit in length, was adorned with jade flowers in the form of seven precious jewels. The king's neck was adorned with a radiant jade, shining like the sun, and a conch shell, as white as the moon. The precious golden mandala, representing the four continents and Mount Meru, was offered, and the master was praised: Not relying on father and mother, you appeared as an emanation from within a lotus. To tame beings, you cut off the cycle of birth and death, and abide in the vajra body. From the expanse of impartial wisdom, you reveal the Buddha's intention to the fortunate ones. Skilled in taming with various methods, you bind arrogant gods and demons by oath. Perfecting the activities of the three kayas, you are superior to all Buddhas, an incarnate being. I prostrate and praise with devotion to the vajra garlanded lotus body. Although you do not need to enjoy or crave the five desirable qualities, you accept them with compassion to accumulate merit for all beings. I beseech you to regard me with compassion and grant me the supreme meaning of the profound! Thus, with folded hands and bowed head, I prostrate. The master said: Noble Lhachig, are you interested in my body? He replied: I am interested. The master said: Free from the diseases of the four elements, and abandoning the two sufferings of birth and death, you work for the benefit of beings, possessing supreme compassion, and your mind always abides in the truth of Dharma. I am interested in the body that saves beings. The master said: Better than a thousand kalpas of Buddhas, know that the lama is more important. Why do all the Buddhas of a thousand kalpas attain Buddhahood by relying on lamas?

Nga! Before the existence of the Lama, there was not even the name of Buddha. Thus it is said. The Lama is the Buddha, the Lama is the Dharma, likewise the Lama is the Sangha, the root of the Three Jewels. Abandon all offerings, Make the Lama's offering correctly. Pleasing him, whatever desired accomplishments will arise. Thus it is said. Then the king asked the teacher: Great Teacher, in order to accomplish the fruit of Buddhahood from the cause of sentient beings, is it not that the view of realization is most precious in the very beginning? What is it that possesses realization and view? Thus he asked. The teacher said: The very essence, the heart, of all views is the mind of Bodhichitta. All the great trichiliocosm, all the Sugatas of the ten directions, and all the sentient beings of the three realms are of one meaning, gathered into the heart, the mind of Bodhichitta. That which is called mind arises in various ways without being made. Now, what is the difference between sentient beings and Buddhas? There is no difference other than whether the mind is realized or not. The cause of Buddhahood is present within oneself, but one does not recognize it. Because one does not recognize the nature of the mind, one wanders in the six realms. Now, what means are there to realize the mind? Thus he asked. He said: For that, the oral instructions of the Lama are necessary. There is something called mind, which is experienced as memory and awareness. Do not look at the mind outwardly, look inwardly. With the mind, search for the mind. Determine the nature of the mind. Where did this mind come from in the beginning? Where does it abide now? Where will it go in the end? Look! When one looks at one's own mind in this way, one does not find where it came from, where it abides, or where it goes. Because it cannot be pointed out as being like this, the mind has no outer or inner, no seer or seen, it is a great wisdom free from extremes, primordially empty, primordially free, vast and all-pervading. Wisdom abides in itself in its own place. It is not like something done now, but it abides in itself as primordial. Recognizing that is definitely the view, he said. That which is called having conviction is like the sky, spontaneously accomplished from the beginning. Like the sun, the darkness of ignorance is without foundation. Like the lotus, it is not stained by faults. Like gold, its meaning does not change from the nature of reality. Like the ocean, it is without movement. Like a river, it is without interruption. Like heaven and earth, it is without gathering and scattering. Like a mountain.
