Like the sky, there is no change. When such meaning is understood and one is in a stable state, it is said to be the union of understanding and view." The king asked, "What is it to have meditative experience?" The master replied, "Listen, O king! To have meditative experience is: the nature of mind is uncorrected, unadulterated, pure, genuinely self-existing, relaxed, not projecting outwards, not drawing inwards, abiding without attachment. Like a lamp placed in the great equality of Dharma-nature, unshaken by the wind. The experiences therein are: awareness is hazy, dull, interrupted, blissful, clear, without thought, appearances are dim, attachment is small, and if there is disharmony with worldly behavior, these are signs of experience, so do not be surprised by anything, and do not be attached to anything. This is called having meditative experience." The king asked, "What is it to have conduct of equal taste?" The master replied, "There is no break between conduct and meditation. In all activities such as walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, even if there is no meditation, do not forget, but remember. Like a river, flowing continuously. Equal taste means that for all the desirable qualities seen and heard by the five senses, there is no attachment or clinging, and one is possessed by the Dharma-nature. There is no acceptance or rejection of anything, like going to the treasure island of gold. Only this is called having conduct of equal taste." The king further asked, "Where is the dangerous path of unchanging conceptual thought cut off?" The master replied, "When abiding in equanimity, when conceptual thoughts arise, whatever arises, arises from one's own mind. Since the mind is not established in anything, the nature of the arising of conceptual thought is emptiness. Just as clouds arise from the sky and then dissipate into the sky, conceptual thoughts arise from the mind and then dissipate into the nature of the mind. Conceptual thoughts are the nature of Dharma-nature." Cutting off the dangerous path is: if the mind flows into various thoughts, then awareness is placed on that thought, like a thief in an empty house. Conceptual thoughts cannot cause any harm to the empty mind. This is called cutting off the dangerous path of flowing conceptual thoughts." The king asked the master, "Where is the confidence of the unchanging fruit established?"

The earth spoke: O Lord Lhachig, live on! Bodhicitta is not produced by causes, it is not destroyed by conditions, it is not made by wise Buddhas, it is not transformed by clever sentient beings. That which is inherently present within oneself, when recognized through the guru's instructions, since the ancestor of the Buddhas is the mind, it is like recognizing someone one has known before. In such a state of stability and manifest realization, all the Buddhas of the three times have attained Buddhahood. It is like a prince being enthroned, without fear or shyness. Since one is naturally and spontaneously enlightened, it is called having confidence in the result. The master asked the king: Where is the boundary between error and fault determined? The master said: O Lord Lhachig! If hope and doubt arise, it is the fault of not realizing the view. If wisdom does not give rise to bodhicitta, there is no hope in the Buddha, and no fear of falling into sentient existence. If the object of meditation and the meditator arise, it is the fault of not cutting through the defilements of mind itself. In the nature of reality, which is free from elaboration, there is no object to be meditated upon, no meditator, and nothing to meditate on. If acceptance and rejection arise, it is the fault of not cutting through attachment, so the nature of mind is inherently empty, inherently free. There is no attachment to what is to be accomplished, no abandonment of what is to be discarded, and no acceptance or rejection of qualities and faults. If one is attached to possessions, it is the fault of not knowing how to carry them on the path, so carry them without any aim or attachment, and know that they are separate from the root of attachment. In short, non-distraction is the view, non-abiding is the meditation, non-experience is the experience, and non-attainment is the fruit. Beyond that, even the Buddhas of the three times have not spoken. That is what is called determining the boundary between error and fault. The master asked the king: What is the elimination of the fault of needing to know for sure? The master said: Even if you realize that your own mind is Buddha, do not abandon the guru; even if you realize that appearances are mind, do not cut off the continuity of virtuous roots of conditioned phenomena; even if you have no hope in the Buddha, worship the Three Jewels as gods; even if you have no doubt about samsara, abandon even the slightest sin; even if you have gained confidence in the unchanging nature of reality, do not falsely accuse any dharma; and have samadhi and clairvoyance, etc., within yourself.
