Endowed with wisdom, one takes refuge with the mind of remembering the qualities of the Three Jewels, which is endowed with three kinds of special thoughts: First, thinking that since samsara has no beginning, one must start learning from now on; second, thinking that the gods of heretics and others are not the objects of my refuge; third, thinking that only the all-knowing Buddha is the supreme object of my refuge. Common refuge is said to be at the time of arising. Taking refuge should not be a mere formality; it should not be like a headless fly going nowhere. How should one take refuge? One should go through the three doors: fearing the lower realms and samsara, trusting in the blessings of the Three Jewels, and taking refuge with firm faith and compassion. In general, if a person wants this life to be stable and the next life to be stable, their Dharma practice will be like a dragonfly skimming the water, and they will end up with nothing. At this time, one should know the ritual of taking refuge. With what kind of special intention does one take refuge? One takes refuge with the intention of taking on the responsibility of benefiting others. Even if one only wants to abandon samsara and attain the fruit of nirvana, one cannot attain perfect enlightenment. Therefore, in order to liberate all sentient beings from the suffering of samsara, one takes refuge with the thought that oneself and all sentient beings of the three realms will take refuge until they attain the essence of enlightenment. All desires are desires of dualistic grasping. If one does not separate from dualistic grasping, taking refuge will not be effective. Jomo asked the teacher: How many precepts should one learn for outer refuge? The teacher replied: In order to prevent those who have taken refuge from degenerating, one should skillfully learn the eight precepts. When asked what the eight precepts are, he replied: The first is the three special precepts: after taking refuge in the Buddha, do not pay homage to other gods; after taking refuge in the Dharma, abandon harming sentient beings; after taking refuge in the Sangha, do not associate with non-Buddhists. These are the three precepts. Among them, after taking refuge in the Buddha, do not pay homage to other gods. The so-called other gods are Kumaras, Vishnu, Shiva, and other worldly beings.

If you prostrate to the gods you rely on, the refuge will be lost. If you take refuge in them, the vows of refuge will be lost, it is said. Secondly, having taken refuge in the Dharma, completely abandoning harm to sentient beings is the greatest killing. The vows of refuge will be broken. If you strike in anger, enslave, pierce the nose, put on a yoke, pluck hair, and so on, the vows of refuge and above will be lost, it is said. Thirdly, having taken refuge in the Sangha, you should abandon association with non-Buddhist people. If you associate with people who hold to views of permanence and annihilation, the vows will be lost. If you conform to their views and behavior, the vows of refuge will be lost. In short, all the Dharma is contained within refuge, but those with wrong views cannot understand it, it is said. The common trainings are five in number. That is, at the very beginning, a great offering should be made with the essence of what is eaten and drunk, and on the fourteenth day, a great offering should be made and presented before the Three Jewels, and pray for them to come to the offering. Then on the fifteenth day, make offerings. There are four kinds of offerings: the offering of prostration, the offering of material arrangement, the offering of praise, and the offering of practice. The first of the four, the offering of prostration, is: straighten your body, join your palms, remember the qualities of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, and prostrate, thinking that your feet touch the wheel mark on their feet. Then there is the offering of objects, such as flowers, which are offerings that have not been fully enjoyed by the owner, and the offering of samadhi, and also offer one's own body. The offering of praise should also be made in a melodic way. The offering of practice is: meditate on emptiness, compassion, and the unwavering mind of enlightenment, and then dedicate the root of virtue arising from that for the benefit of all sentient beings, praying to attain perfect enlightenment, it is said. Guru Padmasambhava said: For the Three Jewels, a cup of water and a speck of dust of smoke are not needed; it is the cause for the entry of the Buddha's rays. The offering of the essence of what is eaten and drunk is: cut three portions of the divine food from the essence of the food, and recite three times (Tibetan: ཨཱོྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ओṃ, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Om) (Tibetan: ཨཱཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: आः, Sanskrit Romanization: āḥ, Chinese literal meaning: Ah) (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हूँ, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Hum), visualizing them as transforming into an ocean of nectar, and then offer the Three Jewels to your own yidam deity.

Visualize the Three Jewels surrounded by immeasurable retinues, and offer them nectar, requesting them to partake. If you don't know even that much, then offer, "Please, Three Jewels, partake." Even if you have nothing to offer, please offer a cup of water every day. If you don't offer it, you break the refuge vow. The teacher said: Offering to the Three Jewels does not require leftovers of food. Eating what has been accumulated without sharing it with the sangha is eating leftovers. Second, not abandoning the Three Jewels for the sake of body, life, reputation, or benefit: Not abandoning for the sake of the body: Even if they say to gouge out your eyes, cut off your feet, cut off your ears, cut off your nose, or cut off your limbs, you must not abandon refuge, even if it means being cut. Not abandoning for the sake of life: Even if they say they will kill you, you must not abandon refuge, even if it means being killed. Not abandoning for the sake of reputation or benefit: Even if they fill the entire Jambudvipa with jewels and offer them to you, saying, "Give up refuge," you must not abandon it. Third, no matter what happens to you, whether sickness, hardship, happiness, or sorrow, arrange a mandala and the five offerings, offer them to the Three Jewels, and then take refuge. Request the venerable lama, the great Vajradhara, and all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to consider me. Request that all my illnesses, non-humans, spirits, and all the calamities caused by spirits be extinguished, and request that peace, auspiciousness, and happiness arise. Furthermore, accumulating merit, reciting scriptures, and offering tormas, etc., can all be done as aids to refuge. If that doesn't help, then the Three Jewels have no blessing. Do not give rise to the wrong view that the Dharma is not true. Think to yourself, "When my bad karma is exhausted, I will naturally get better." Do not seek help from diviners, Bonpos, or others; just take refuge wholeheartedly. Fourth, no matter which direction you go, remember the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, make offerings, and take refuge: For example, if you are going east tomorrow, today you should arrange a mandala and offerings, and take refuge in the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of that direction. How should you pray? Pray to the venerable lama, the great Vajradhara, and all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
