Why? Because it is the cause of all vows. Because it is what makes the thought of nirvana firm. Without taking refuge, vows do not arise. Because without the restraint of vows, there is no correct path. As it is said in the "Seventy Verses on Refuge": "Taking refuge in the Three Jewels of the Sugata, that is the root of the eight vows." And it is said: "Vows are present in all, but absent in those who have not taken refuge." As such, the root of the path is taking refuge. In the sky in front of the Lama, with Avalokiteśvara, Mañjuśrī, and Vajrapāṇi, the three protectors of the lineage, surrounded by immeasurable Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, with the intention of prostrating and making offerings, please recite this together. Please begin reciting the recollection of the Three Jewels and prostrating. Recite three verses such as "Excellent Flower". Thus, after the preliminary practice of honoring with prostrations and offerings, in the main practice, all sentient beings included in the six realms, who have not been mothers and pervade the sky. From now on, until the attainment of the essence of enlightenment, with great respect in body, speech, and mind, with a single-minded intention of taking refuge from the depths of your heart, please repeat after me. Namo! The embodiment of the Lama and the Three Jewels, Glorious Three-Family Protector, I and limitless sentient beings, Until enlightenment, I take refuge, Humbly prostrate and make offerings, I pray to save all beings in the three realms, Eliminate all fears, Lead to the supreme state of liberation. One should rely on the concept based on respectful faith. Furthermore, the common teachings are to never abandon the Three Jewels at any time, and whatever misfortunes and fears such as diseases and evil spirits occur, not to seek other methods than to trust in the Three Jewels, not to interrupt the timely offerings, to remember the benefits, to lead oneself and others into refuge, and to prostrate to the Buddha in the direction one is going, etc., these five should also be constantly strived for. The benefits of obtaining such vows are, as the treasure text says: The seed of enlightenment and liberation is sown, liberation from all fears, wishes will be fulfilled as desired, it is the essence of the vehicle of gods and humans. As it is extensively explained in the scriptures of the Buddhas, please keep it in mind. Then, as in the early translation of the Kama scriptures, the guidance of connecting meditation is connected, here too, it is good to complete each guidance separately according to the meaning indicated by the Secret Master Heart Drop. Here, the guidance of the vehicle of gods and humans, etc., the following contents should also be understood as similar. ༈ །། Secondly, the empowerment of the Hearer Vehicle is: Then, the content of the great Sutra of the Vinaya, etc., even the pinnacle of the vehicle, is divided into nine categories of vehicles in the way of entering the path in stages. All are lower vehicles that are said to be related to the skillful means of mantra, divided into Hearers and Solitary Realizers, first from the Sutra: Bhikshus, Arhats, exhaustion of outflows. With this doctrine, in order to grant the empowerment of the Hearer Vehicle, please visualize as follows: From the field of merit generated in front, the noble Manjushri manifests, holding the image of Shariputra, the Venerable Shariputra, who holds the image of a Hearer, merges into yourself, blessing your continuum. Place the body image on your head and recite: Om, Manjushri holding the image of a Hearer, eliminating all afflictions, bestowing the supreme blessing of possessing pure morality. And place the scripture on your head and recite the Dharani of pure morality: Om, Amoghashila, etc. Place the stupa on your head and recite the heart mantra of the stupa. Then turn your face to it, from the field of merit generated in front, Avalokiteshvara manifests, holding the image of Ananda, who holds the image of a Hearer, holding a fan, etc., and recite: Om, Avalokiteshvara holding the image of a Hearer.
