Thinking, "How can I be sure to realize something?" Relax the body and mind. From that point on, do not cut off the past, do not welcome the future. Do not make any discriminations or judgments in the mind about the present awareness, such as "This is this, that is that." Instead, by resting in the natural state of being, a naked and serene awareness will arise. After it arises, do not make any alterations or modifications, but rest in the natural state of being. This is the meditation method for individuals of the highest capacity, called "resting awareness in total openness." It is sufficient to abide in that. However, most people are moved by conceptual thoughts and find it difficult to recognize that. Therefore, it is crucial to strive to investigate the three aspects of the mind: its origin, its dwelling place, and its destination. First, examine the place of origin and the one who originates. Second, examine the place of dwelling and the one who dwells. Finally, examine the place of destination and the one who goes. First, examining the place of origin and the one who originates: "One's own mind" refers to that which is aware, moving, changing, flickering, remembering this and that, arising this and that, appearing and scattering in various ways. One should examine and investigate where this first thought arises from. Is it composed of the four external elements? Or does it arise from one's own illusory body? Or does it arise from the secret union of parents? Does it arise from appearance or from emptiness? If one thinks it arises from appearance, where is its object and basis? If one thinks it arises from emptiness, where is the place of origin? Does mind arise from mind? Or how does it arise? In short, one should look up, look down, look outward, and look inward, and continue to observe until one has not determined it. If it is composed of the four external elements, then it should have a shape and color. Then, is its shape round, square, semi-circular, triangular, spherical, oblong, flat, etc.? One should carefully observe and investigate. Similarly, if it has a shape, then it should also have a color, such as white, yellow, red, green, blue, black, variegated, etc. Which one is it? One should carefully observe and investigate. Moreover, does each element produce one mind? Or does one mind arise from the gathering of all the elements? One should carefully observe and investigate. If one thinks that mind is composed of one's own illusory body, then where does it reside in the body: externally, internally, at the head, at the tail, or in the middle? One should carefully observe and investigate. If one thinks that it arises from one's own heart

Examine and analyze where the beginning and end of the heart, the outer skin, the inner flesh, fat, blood, etc., come from. Also, examine whether the mind to be sought and the seeker are the same or what they are like. Likewise, the dwelling in between. If you think such a mind has arisen, does it dwell on external objects? Or where does it dwell inside and outside your own body? Examine and analyze carefully. Finally, where does it go? When confused thoughts arise and you think this has gone, where does this go? What is the place to go and who is the one who goes like? If the thought vanishes and you think it's gone, look where it vanishes. Moreover, if you think this mind is non-existent, it is not non-existent. If it were non-existent, then this very confused thought would not arise now. If you think it is a thing, then with what shape, color, size, function, or essence is it represented? When thinking like this, look back at the knowing consciousness that can think, and look forward at the consciousness that can be seen. In short, like not letting a bird fly away, pursue to the end, applying only wisdom. Like an old woman pointing the way, through careful observation and analysis, a clear awareness free from memory, thought, and elaboration arises, and it is a pristine state without clinging. When that arises, do not make any modifications, but watch and abide in its natural state, like an old man basking in the sun or like a pile of silk floss. Also, in that state, if a thought suddenly arises, do not let it spread, but hold it tightly. If you let this spread, there will be no opportunity to recognize it. Like this, the lama should also repeatedly ask whether you have found it or not. The disciple should also generate a definite understanding of that without deception. That is, searching for "it is emptiness, there is nothing" and so on, or clinging to the belief that "it is such a thing" and so on. Also, if you think, "The mind is inherently existent, could it be that it has not been found?", it means that you have not yet determined the origin and end of the mind, so you should repeat the previous objects of focus and investigate thoroughly. Even if the lama is learned in Dharma and has profound instructions, if the disciple does not seek the mind, it is like a craftsman, no matter how skilled, cannot make anything without the materials to make it. Likewise, the disciple must cut through the flesh of the mind and generate definite understanding. By striving in this way, in general, the sins of the mind are purified and obstacles are pacified. In particular, by reversing the clinging to the appearances of the mind, one will not fall into samsara in the future. Ultimately, one will be liberated into the Dharmakaya of the Vajra Mind.
