Initially, before becoming accustomed, the breath should not be too forceful, but should be kept gentle and moderate. If the four combinations are not understood, there is a great danger that merit will turn into fault. It is said. So, what are the four combinations? To draw in like an iron hook, to fill like a vase, to constrict or suppress like a thumb-pressed seal, and to shoot out like an arrow—these are the four. As the Venerable Lhazikpa said: Drawing in and filling, constricting and suppressing, shooting like an arrow—these are the four aspects. It is said. When holding the breath, the object of focus is the syllable Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) at the heart center, maintaining single-pointed concentration, and without relying on the combination of tongue and lips, mentally recite Oṃ (藏文:ཨོཾ,梵文天城体:ओं,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:嗡) Vajra (藏文:བཛྲ,梵文天城体:वज्र,梵文罗马拟音:vajra,汉语字面意思:金刚) Sattva (藏文:སཏྭ,梵文天城体:सत्त्व,梵文罗马拟音:sattva,汉语字面意思:萨埵) Āḥ (藏文:ཨཱ,梵文天城体:आ,梵文罗马拟音:ā,汉语字面意思:阿)! One should strive in the mental recitation of the six-syllable mantra. Secondly, to train in the subtle Vajra recitation: When accustomed to the three—entering, abiding, and exiting—combine the sound of Oṃ (藏文:ཨོཾ,梵文天城体:ओं,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:嗡), Āḥ (藏文:ཨཱ,梵文天城体:आ,梵文罗马拟音:ā,汉语字面意思:阿), and Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) with the mind's resonance, and practice the unborn Vajra recitation. It is said, that is, one should perform a clear visualization and recitation of oneself as the Samaya-sattva, the Wisdom-sattva at the heart, the Samadhi-sattva, and the syllable Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽), and from that point, first eliminate three slow and long breaths as before. Then, without altering the natural flow of breath, as it enters, mentally recall the sound of Oṃ (藏文:ཨོཾ,梵文天城体:ओं,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:嗡); as it abides, recall the sound of Āḥ (藏文:ཨཱ,梵文天城体:आ,梵文罗马拟音:ā,汉语字面意思:阿); and as it exits, recall the sound of Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽). Combining the three—entering, abiding, and exiting—of the breath with the three syllables, transform the breath, mantra, and emptiness into an indivisible symbol, and practice the Vajra recitation until one does not become weary. By striving in this way with single-pointed concentration, the breath becomes gentle and slow, to the point that its movement is not felt, the breath constantly flows in an even manner, and one clearly understands the number of inhalations and exhalations without thinking about it, and the breath becomes subtle and long, and so on. At that point, lower the sounds of Oṃ (藏文:ཨོཾ,梵文天城体:ओं,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:嗡) and Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽), and lengthen the sound of Āḥ (藏文:ཨཱ,梵文天城体:आ,梵文罗马拟音:ā,汉语字面意思:阿). Moreover, during the stage of ripening learning, even this alone needs to be practiced continuously for more than a week. Therefore, a person with perseverance should practice diligently in this way. When the breath tends to stagnate, one should skillfully dispel it by the sound of a bell or by stimulating the nose with the fragrance of incense. If these methods are not effective, applying a cold stone to the heart will help. In any case, one should become accustomed to this, and practice the Vajra recitation in conjunction with vase breathing that has the four combinations.

Also, the physical posture is as described above, with hands in fists, backs of hands placed on the knees, etc. The key to speech is to clear the stale air three times, then visualize the upward-moving air as the sound of Om (藏文:ཨོཾ,梵文天城体:ओम्,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:Om), inhaling slowly and completely through the nostrils. Then, visualize residing in the sound of Ah (藏文:ཨཱཿ,梵文天城体:आः,梵文罗马拟音:āḥ,汉语字面意思:Ah) and press down firmly. Draw in a little of the downward-moving air and hold the vase-like breath retention gently and appropriately at the navel, as before. If you cannot do that, draw in and supplement from the left, right, and center, and then compress. If you still cannot do that, visualize the sound of Hum (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:Hum), and exhale with a subtle, long, and forceful breath. Again, inhale with the sound of Om By practicing forceful breath control, if you can hold your breath for a long time without feeling much discomfort, then that is a sign that you have mastered vase-like breath retention. Then, third, if you feel weary, engage in verbal recitation. That is, "With weariness, recite mantras, including expansion and contraction, and engage in verbal recitation without distraction, meeting the standards of time and number." That is, first, perform a clear visualization and recitation of the Three Protectors. Visualize around the Hum (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:Hum) syllable of the meditation deity, a very fine rosary of mantras to be recited, drawn with fine threads, or like knots tied on a horse's tail. Visualize the extremely fine rosary, like pearls strung on a string, or white and shimmering like the color of mercury, rotating clockwise, and then focus your mind on it for a moment. From that point on, when it has become so clear and stable, together with the rosary, first recite the six-syllable mantra: Om (藏文:ཨོཾ,梵文天城体:ओम्,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:Om) Vajra Sattva Ah (藏文:ཨཱཿ,梵文天城体:आः,梵文罗马拟音:āḥ,汉语字面意思:Ah). Then recite the Hundred Syllable Mantra: Om (藏文:ཨོཾ,梵文天城体:ओम्,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:Om) Vajrasattva Samaya, Manupalaya, Vajrasattva Tvenopatishtha, Dridho Me Bhava, Sutoshyo Me Bhava, Suposhyo Me Bhava, Anurakto Me Bhava, Sarva Siddhim Me Prayaccha, Sarva Karma Su Tsame Tsittam, Shriyam Kuru Hum (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:Hum), Ha Ha Ha Ha Ho, Bhagavan Sarva Tathagata Vajra Ma Me Munca Vajri Bhava Maha Samaya Sattva Ah (藏文:ཨཱཿ,梵文天城体:आः,梵文罗马拟音:āḥ,汉语字面意思:Ah) Hum (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:Hum). While reciting, maintain focus for a moment. From that point on, from the seed syllable and mantra rosary in your heart, radiate five-colored light rays, spreading like mist. Offer pleasing offerings to the bodies, speech, and minds of all the Buddhas of the ten directions and their retinues. Visualize all of that compassion and blessing, in the form of light rays, quietly dissolving into the seed syllable and mantra rosary in your heart, like snow falling on a rock. Or,
