One must live counting the days. At that time, when the mother eats hot food, it is like falling into a hot hell; when she eats cold food, it is like falling into a cold hell; when she eats a lot of food, it is like being crushed by a mountain and squeezed between rocks, causing suffering. The suffering caused by bodily movements and so on is like being caught in a whirlpool, fearing falling off a cliff. When a man and woman engage in sexual intercourse, it is like entering a pit of fire. Moreover, not only that, but one must also experience immeasurable suffering such as turning over and over, rolling around, and so on. Then, when the months are full and one emerges from the mother's womb, it is also because the mother's womb has become narrow, like being pulled through the eye of a needle, causing suffering like being skinned alive. When the umbilical cord is cut, it is like all the internal organs are coming out, and thorns are being stuck into the heart, causing suffering. When touching the mother's flesh, it is like touching red-hot iron and thorns, causing suffering. No matter how soft the clothes are that are put on, it is also because the knots of the mother's womb have become rough, like being touched by thorns, causing suffering. When being held in one's arms, it is like being carried away by a hawk, causing suffering. Furthermore, because one is not properly cared for by shepherds and others, suffering arises from insects entering the sensory doors, and from the body being bitten by mosquitoes and lice, and from being uncomfortable due to urine and so on below. In short, no matter what unpleasant thing happens, nothing can be done except cry. Then, as age increases, the youth of the body reaches its peak, becoming white and red, attracting the eyes of all. But in the end, the color fades, the face turns pale, filled with wrinkles, and the hair also turns gray. The appearance also deteriorates, the teeth fall out. The body that was once straight also becomes bent and hunched. The limbs also become crooked, becoming unpleasant to everyone. The senses decline, the eyes cannot see clearly, and the ears are deaf. Enjoyment also decreases, one cannot eat much if one eats too much, and one is hungry if one eats too little. Strength declines, it is difficult to stand up, one walks unsteadily, and one pants when sitting. Speech also becomes mumbled. The suffering of being despised by young people, doing rough work, and so on. Finally, due to the karma of previous lives and sudden factors, one is afflicted by diseases that disturb the four elements, causing pain to increase and the body to weaken.

There is no freedom to enjoy desired sleep and food, etc. Unwanted medicines and acupuncture, etc., must be relied upon. There is no end to the suffering of fearing death. At the time of death, food, wealth, strength, medicine, service, mantras, and auspicious connections are of no help. Moreover, all the enjoyments, power, retinue, and friends that were previously acquired with effort, and even the cherished and beloved body, must be left behind, and one dies with intense terminal suffering. These four sufferings must be experienced in common by all humans. Moreover, individual sufferings also occur. In the intervals when the four sufferings are relatively light, one exhausts the strength of body and mind in order to obtain small pleasures and wealth in this life, and even though one exerts much effort, the suffering of not achieving one's desires. The suffering of encountering undesirable conditions such as heat and cold, hunger and thirst, disease, evil spirits, enemies, and thieves. The suffering of being separated from the glory of joy and happiness such as relatives, friends, retinue, and enjoyments. In short, those who have wealth must protect it, and the more retinue and enjoyments one has, the more one must guard them. In particular, kings and others suffer from the fear of unexpected punishments. Poor people suffer greatly from poverty and destitution because they cannot find the enjoyments they desire, such as food and drink. As it is said in the Jataka: One is tormented by guarding, and the other is exhausted by searching. Whether rich or poor, in either case, there is no happiness. And as it is said in the Four Hundred Verses: श्रेष्ठ(梵文天城体,śreṣṭha,梵文罗马拟音,shreshtha,Superior) has mental suffering, and the inferior have bodily suffering. These two sufferings destroy this world day by day. As it is said, these things that we ourselves have experienced are enough to illustrate this. Therefore, even if one is born in the human realm, one must endure such suffering. Second, the instruction on contemplating the suffering of the Asuras is: First, when seeing the perfect glory of the gods, because of jealousy, one always feels unbearable intense pain in the heart, and constantly fights with the gods. Because the Asuras have little merit, they are killed and beaten.
