The suffering of having everything burned and flames blazing fiercely from the stomach. Furthermore, due to the complete reversal of all seasons, even the moon is unbearably hot in summer, and even the sun is unbearably cold in winter. In spring, even the rain clouds pour down fire rain. Moreover, one must rely solely on food that causes suffering, such as excrement, snot, impurities, and ashes. There is no time to be satisfied or full from hunger and thirst. One is constantly exhausted and worn out from searching for food. Due to weakness, the joints crackle and burn. Being enemies with each other, they are bound, beaten, killed, threatened, and flee in great terror without any support, enduring intense and prolonged suffering. Regarding the difference in lifespan, the Treasury of Knowledge states, "Five hundred with months as days." This means that one human month is counted as one day, making the lifespan five hundred years. The Letter to a Friend states, "Five thousand and ten thousand, they do not go to death." Thus, some pretas have a lifespan of five thousand years, while others are said to live for ten thousand years. The cause of such suffering is due to miserliness and obstruction, so one should always be mindful and vigilant in the present moment. Therefore, if one is born in the realm of pretas, one must endure such suffering, one should think in this way. Third is the guidance on contemplating the suffering of animals: Animals are of two types: those that live in groups and those that are scattered. Those that live in groups are those that live in the great outer ocean. For them, the nagas face the daily fear of gravel and the harm of garudas, as well as the worry of being carried away by the waves and harmed. Furthermore, the large ones eat many small ones at once, and many small ones join together to eat one large one, and so on, there is such suffering. Those that are scattered are those that live in the realms of gods and humans. Those that are not owned, among themselves, the strong harm the weak, the weak are eaten alive, and so on. Furthermore, humans and others kill them involuntarily for their meat, skin, bones, feathers, and so on. Those that are owned are forced to carry unbearable loads, plow...

Shearing, milking, plucking wool, cutting wool, and also beating, fouling, and striking, etc. In short, even if the suffering of skinning and extracting the heart occurs, one must still endure and diligently work for people without freedom. In common, one must experience the unimaginably intense suffering of foolish servitude. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": "Even in the animal realm, one suffers various pains such as being killed, bound, and beaten. Those who have abandoned peaceful virtues devour each other, which is extremely unbearable. Some die for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, blood, meat, and leather. Without freedom, others are struck and used with feet, hands, and iron and iron hooks." Thus it is said. The lifespan is not entirely certain. As it is said in "Animals": "The longest can be a kalpa." Therefore, it is said that some nagas and others can live for about a middle kalpa, while the short ones are uncertain. Oh, since this is the case, now, would we ourselves briefly put a finger in the fire, or stay naked in a cold, icy snowdrift in winter, or go without food and drink for days, merely waiting for food and drink, and even the small suffering of being bitten by mosquitoes and lice on the body is difficult to bear. Then, how can the suffering of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals be endured? Thinking of this, one should be inspired by strong renunciation and aversion based on one's own current experience, so that this life of leisure and endowment becomes meaningful. Next, the second is the guidance on contemplating the suffering of the heavens: This is also through the power of accumulating virtuous deeds corresponding to merit, that is, small, medium, and large virtuous deeds, gradually being reborn as humans, desire realm gods, and gods of higher realms, etc., temporarily enjoying small fruits of happiness, but is that enough? It is not. No matter where one is reborn in the high or low of samsara, like a patient with constant pain, there is not even a moment of opportunity for happiness. What we ourselves have experienced is enough to illustrate this. Therefore, contemplating the suffering of humans, first, we ourselves are in the mother's womb, in a narrow, dark, foul-smelling environment where changes in hot and cold are difficult to bear.
