Some are walking on the ground, and some are being chased by the hell's guards and executioners. When they reach the foot of that mountain, if we are in the human realm, those whom we cherish in our hearts, such as parents or relatives, will call out from the top of that mountain with a clear voice, "Oh, come here!" This causes unbearable and intense suffering in the heart. When climbing from the foot of that mountain, the skin is peeled off, the flesh is scraped off, blood flows incessantly, and the tendons are scattered like wool combed by a comb. Some stick there, and when some reach the top of the mountain, they suffer from having their flesh pecked and eyes gouged out by iron-beaked birds and crows. Again, being called from the foot of that mountain, they experience suffering as before. When they reach there, they are embraced by vicious dogs, venomous snakes, iron-beaked men, and copper-beaked ogresses, who devour their flesh, causing suffering. Even if they escape from that, they fall into the immeasurable river of ashes, and when they sink to the bottom, the skin and flesh separate, leaving only white bones. When they emerge, they immediately revive. Going in and out of the water, they must endure suffering until their karma is exhausted. Oh, all of this is only the suffering of one's own actions, and there is not even a particle of truth that exists independently outside of it. Therefore, between this life and hell, there is only this breath flowing, and there is not even a moment of leisure to stay, so we must think strongly about this. As Shantideva said, "Having done the deeds of hell, why do you live so comfortably?" And in the Letter to a Friend it is also said, "The moment a sinner's breath is cut off, the immeasurable suffering of hell appears before him. Who is it that still has no fear? That mind is of the nature of a vajra. Seeing, hearing, writing, remembering, reading, or sculpting the image of hell, one will generate great fear. What need is there to speak of those who actually experience the ripening results?" It is also said, "If one were stabbed three hundred times a day with short spears, what intense suffering would that be? That cannot be compared to even a small part of the suffering of hell, nor can it be endured." As it is said, therefore, the world...

If one is born in hell, one must endure such suffering, I think to myself. The guidance on contemplating the suffering of pretas, the second of the unfortunate realms, is: It is said that the realm of pretas is located approximately five hundred yojanas below Jambudvipa. The land of pretas there is like a desolate city or a rugged, uneven mass of red copper, unpleasant and always a cold place. Regarding this, the Sutra of Mindfulness states that there are six types of pretas, but here, from a condensed perspective, there are four: those with common obscurations, those with external obscurations, those with internal obscurations, and those with obscurations related to food and drink. Among these, those with common obscurations are afflicted by hunger and thirst, causing their bodies to be emaciated and thin, their eyes sunken, their empty intestines clinging to their backs, their hair standing up like pig bristles, their heads only the size of a plate, their necks as thin as a bowstring, their bellies as large as a region, and their limbs as thin as reeds. Thus, having never tasted any food or drink, their joints crackle and burn with fire, and so on, they endure suffering. Those with external obscurations wander everywhere in search of food and drink, but cannot find any. Sometimes they see piles of food as large as mountains, but as they struggle to reach them, some turn into piles of dirt, and some disappear without a trace. Again, they see fruit-bearing trees, and as they crave them and struggle to reach them, some turn into black heaps of coal, and some turn into rugged, uneven rubble. Some are surrounded by many armed men and cannot enjoy them. And when they see meadows, some vanish without a trace, turning into gray gravel, and some turn into seas of pus and blood. Furthermore, although there is actually no guard over the great ocean, it is surrounded by many armed men, and they endure suffering. Those with internal obscurations have no control over any food or drink. Even if they have control, their mouths are as small as the eye of a needle and cannot pass anything through, and the poison in their mouths dries up the food. Even if it doesn't dry up, their throats are too thin to pass anything through. Even if it passes through, their bellies are as large as a region and cannot be filled. Even if they are filled, their limbs are as thin as reeds and cannot bear the weight, and they endure suffering. Those with obscurations related to food and drink, as soon as food and drink reach their mouths, fire blazes from their mouths and eventually burns their internal organs.
