Obtaining this precious human body with leisure and endowment is very difficult. From where is it difficult to obtain? It is difficult for sentient beings of the six realms to obtain it from the eight states of unfreedom. Where is it difficult to obtain? It is difficult to obtain in the central region of the southern continent of Jambudvipa. By what cause is it difficult to obtain? It is necessary to have a pure cause for leisure and endowment, which is virtue. Because in the lower realms, there is no opportunity to accumulate merit and virtue with a body of leisure and endowment, there is only suffering, so it is difficult to obtain. From how many aspects is it difficult to obtain? In general, compared to the number of other sentient beings, the human body with leisure and endowment is also very rare, so it is difficult to obtain. In what way is it difficult to obtain? It is as difficult as throwing beans against a wall and having one stick. Therefore, having obtained this precious human body with leisure and endowment, if it is wasted meaninglessly, it will be difficult to obtain such leisure and endowment in the future, so it is very important to strive on the profound path. This should be done for three days. Second, the mind training of meditating on death and impermanence has three aspects: the certainty of death, the uncertainty of when death will occur, and the fact that death is of no benefit to anything. First, all beings born in the past have not remained, so death is certain. All beings seen and heard now are impermanent, so death is certain. Body and mind are compounded, so death is certain. Life has no increase, only decrease, so death is certain. The example of the certainty of death is like piercing a person's navel with a weapon. Second, there is no certainty of when death will occur, because we people of Jambudvipa have no fixed lifespan, so there is no certainty of when death will occur. Because there are many causes of death, there is no certainty of when death will occur. Life has no fixed time, and causes have no certainty, so there is no certainty of when death will occur. Compounded things have the nature of disintegration, so there is no certainty of when death will occur. The example of the uncertainty of when death will occur is like dew on the tip of grass. Third, death is of no benefit to anything, because medicine for sustaining life is of no benefit to death. Close relatives are of no benefit at the time of death, accumulated wealth is also of no benefit to death, and built castles and defending armies are also of no benefit to death. The example of death being of no benefit to anything is like the shadow of the aging sun. Therefore, in general, the beginning, middle, and end of the practice of the profound path all

It is crucial to focus on this very constancy as the key point. Practice this for three days. Third, training the mind in adopting and abandoning based on the law of karma: Purely white actions, black actions, and mixed actions result in experiencing happiness, suffering, and a mixture of happiness and suffering, respectively. Furthermore, it is said that experiencing happiness comes from actions where the intention is white but the action is black, and from actions where both intention and action are white. Experiencing only suffering comes from actions where the intention is black but the action is white, and from actions where both intention and action are black. Moreover, if either virtue or vice is accompanied by both the preparatory and concluding phases, it is considered an accumulated action, even if the main action is incomplete. If both the preparatory and concluding phases are lacking, it is not considered an accumulated action, even if the main action is extensive. Rejoicing in the virtues and vices of others is considered an accumulated action, even without having performed it oneself. Furthermore, actions that ripen in this life, actions that ripen in the next life, and actions that ripen in other lifetimes result in experiencing their karmic fruits in this life, in future lives, and in multiple lifetimes, respectively. To summarize, black represents non-virtue, and white represents virtue. The method for adopting and abandoning these two is to abandon all sinful non-virtues like poison and to embrace virtues as medicine. This is like the Brahmin grammarian who distinguished between virtue and non-virtue in his own mind by using black and white beans. Initially, there were only black beans. By generating antidotes and practicing adoption and abandonment, a mixture of black and white beans appeared in the middle. Eventually, only white beans remained. Practice in this way. Train the mind in this for three days or as appropriate. Fourth, training the mind by contemplating the faults of samsara: Samsara refers to sentient beings in the three realms. They are the nature of suffering, the essence of suffering, and the whirlpool of suffering. The four root sufferings are like a continuous thread, connected one after another. The six branch sufferings are like ocean waves, without cessation. The minor sufferings are like stars, countless. Therefore, wherever one is born, it is a whirlpool of suffering; whoever one associates with, they are companions in suffering.
