If one does not attain the state of liberation, which is free from all suffering, then when the merits of previous actions are exhausted, one will fall back into the lower realms and experience various unbearable and heavy sufferings for a long time. There is no one who can save one from that suffering except the Three Jewels. Moreover, the Buddha who actually appears to oneself is the Lama, because he is inseparable from the body, speech, and mind of all Buddhas. Therefore, thinking with all one's heart that only the Three Jewels of refuge are one's protector and helper, one should relax one's body and mind and visualize that the place where one is staying is in the center of a beautiful and pleasing pure land made of various jewels. In the center of a wish-fulfilling tree with five branches, full of leaves, flowers, and fruits, filling the expanse of the sky, on a jeweled throne supported by lions, on a seat stacked with various lotuses and suns and moons, is the root Lama Orgyen Vajradhara in union with his consort, surrounded by the lineage Lamas and the assembly of peaceful and wrathful deities. In the center of the branch in front is Buddha Shakyamuni, along with the emanations of the supreme Buddhas of the ten directions and three times. On the branch to the right are the Bodhisattva Sangha, such as Manjushri. On the branch to the left are the Shravaka Sangha, the assembly of noble ones, such as Shariputra. On the branch behind are the Dharma Jewels, in the form of stacked scriptures. All the spaces in between are filled without gaps by assemblies of Dakinis, Dharma protectors, and guardians. Visualize that all of them are dwelling in a manner that is pleasing and loving to oneself. Then, together with all sentient beings equal to space, with intense devotion remembering the qualities and compassion of the objects of refuge, with the single thought of praying to protect all beings who have been our mothers from the intense fear of the suffering of samsara, recite these words: In the space of the sky, filling the sky, are the assemblies of Lamas, Yidams, and Dakinis, and the Buddhas, Dharma, and noble Sangha. I and the six realms respectfully take refuge. In this way, do as much refuge as possible, and at the end of the session,

The light from the objects of refuge illuminates and guides all sentient beings to pure lands. Finally, contemplate that all the objects of refuge dissolve into light and merge into oneself. With this virtue of pure nature, may it uproot samsara and the evil destinies. May all beings quickly attain Buddhahood without dwelling in existence. Thus, dedicate the merit. When sleeping, face the un-dissolved objects of refuge and blend sleep with unwavering devotion. Also, explain the benefits, precepts, and meanings of taking refuge in accordance with the listener's understanding. Fourth, cultivating compassion and bodhicitta: The basis is compassion, and the support is the mind of enlightenment. First: Just as the ten directions of space are immeasurable no matter how one measures them, so too are the realms of the world without end. All of these are pervaded by the six types of sentient beings without any gaps. There is not a single one of those sentient beings who has not been my mother. Just as my births are countless, so too are the times that sentient beings have been my mother without number or end. Just as this life's mother has cared for me, she has protected me from all harm. She has held me with a loving heart, cared for me with compassionate actions, and bestowed countless benefits from limitless sources, being only a kind mother. What reason is there to differentiate between the present mother and the mother of another life, thus creating distinctions of near and far? All of them desire happiness, but because they are ignorant and unskilled in methods, they constantly engage in the causes and effects of suffering, and are tormented and miserable. Recalling these circumstances, unbearable compassion arises, urging tears to flow. Secondly, the supporting bodhicitta: These mothers who have cared for me with kindness since beginningless time are bewildered by the darkness of ignorance, driven mad by the disturbance of afflictions, lack the eyes to see what to accept and reject, have no guidance from virtuous friends, and are beaten by misdeeds, falling into the abyss of samsara and the evil destinies. If we abandon them, who is more shameless than that? Therefore, we must liberate them from the suffering of samsara and establish them in the bliss of liberation. I do not have the power to do that now, so that I may be able to liberate all beings,
