Meditate diligently on these stages of contemplation again. Afterwards, introduce and practice them in conjunction with the way experiences arise, and gradually you will grasp the beginning of experiencing the meaning. Furthermore, what should be understood here is that when practicing the path in this way, the obstacles to meditation in general are, as it is said: "Laziness and the instructions, forgetfulness, sinking and excitement, non-application and application, these are the five faults." Also, the antidote to them is: "The application to abandon them has eight aspects: abiding, abiding in that, cause and effect as well, not forgetting the object, sinking, excitement, and conceptualization, the manifest application to abandon them, and abiding properly in quiescence." As the venerable Maitreya said, this should also be understood here. That is, when one is in equipoise, it seems that more conceptual thoughts arise than before. Or, sometimes one is in a daze, and sometimes one cannot abide, and even if one abides, there is a subtle mental activity deep down that cannot be stopped. All three of these situations should be worked on to abide. However, because the arising of conceptual thoughts is prevented, it cannot be stopped. Therefore, one expands awareness infinitely and focuses on it, and eventually the power of conceptual thoughts weakens, and one grasps the nature of abiding, and one abides in that state. Like a crow flying from a pond, circling and circling, and then landing there again. That is, it is not dependent on abiding and moving, not falling into either the outer six objects or the inner consciousness, but the awareness that transcends arising, ceasing, permanence, and annihilation, the nature of self-knowing and self-illuminating, the unobstructed appearance of power and radiance, vast and boundless, clear and distinct, beyond the realm of speech, guarding that nature without distraction, which will cause the realization of reality to increase and become more stable. Also, if sinking is predominant, exhale stale air, straighten the body, focus the gaze, put pressure on awareness, and strive to arouse awareness, focusing on it. If there is scattering and excitement, lower the gaze, find relaxation in the body, lower the eyelids, relax from the depths of the heart, and abide naturally. Also, sometimes when the sky is clear and cloudless, with your back to the sun, narrow your gaze and look at the expanse of the sky. For example, the emptiness and clarity of the outer sky can open awareness.
