Even if meditating on "unclear," one doubts that it will arise, and therefore hesitates to meditate; "sinking" refers to the state where, naturally and independently of external conditions, awareness loses clarity and falls into a state of sinking and dullness; or sinking occurs due to external conditions such as food, clothing, shelter, and negative influences; "agitation" refers to the spontaneous arising of various scattered thoughts without any cause; or even without intentional effort, scattering occurs due to external conditions; or it is like intentionally controlling and causing thoughts to scatter; "effort" refers to the state where, although the deity is already clear and the mind is abiding, one still desires an even clearer and more abiding state, and therefore tightens awareness, causing the eyebrows to furrow, the energy channels to surge, and becoming scattered; "non-effort" refers to being content with meditation and ceasing to meditate, or not making effort to prevent sinking and agitation when they arise. These are commonly referred to in texts such as the Five Treatises of Maitreya as the five faults that hinder the practice of samadhi, and their meaning is the same except for differences in classification and categorization. Second, the specific faults are twelve: the deity's form is unclear, becoming blurred; or becoming dim; or like being obscured by a shadow, the radiance is not clear; or when meditating on a large deity, it becomes small, and so on, the size of the form changes; or when meditating on a deity with ornaments, it appears without ornaments, and so on, the attire changes; or the face is meditated upon as the image of an animal's face, but it becomes a human face, and so on, the shape changes; or meditating on one deity, it becomes two, and so on, the number changes; or initially meditating on a seated posture, it becomes a standing posture, and so on, the posture changes; or when meditating on Tara, only the green color appears, without the shape of the form, only the color appears; or the form appears, but it does not appear as the color meditated upon, becoming neither this nor that, only the form appears; or initially clear, but immediately gradually becomes unclear, gradually disappearing; or the ornaments, attire, implements, parts of the form, and so on, appear incompletely, which is incompleteness, there are twelve in total. Second, the method for correcting these faults is: for the common faults, the antidote to the seven is relying on the eight abandoning activities, which comes from the common texts, and the name and meaning are the same. That is, forgetting the object of focus

The antidote to that. Regarding the object of focus, first familiarize yourself with it for a long time, then cultivate mindfulness with the thought of not forgetting it. As an antidote to laziness, cultivate faith that is pleased with the benefits of meditating on samadhi, as well as the desire to accomplish it, and the diligence of exerting effort by generating joy from seeing the benefits. As an antidote to doubt, generate conviction of realization and rely on certainty without hesitation. As an antidote to sinking, eliminate the dullness of the mind, generate interest in the benefits of meditation, generate interest in meditation, elevate awareness, practice proper conduct, take a bath, reduce effort, wear thin clothes, and sit in a cool place and a place prone to distraction. As an antidote to excitement, meditate on the faults of samsara and generate renunciation. Bind the mind with the rope of mindfulness and attach it to the tree of the object of focus, hold it with mindfulness without letting it wander, and repeatedly focus on the object of focus. For both sinking and excitement, before they arise, use the awareness of whether they have arisen or not to maintain vigilance. As an antidote to effort, practice equanimity of formations, which means relaxing effort and abiding in a natural state. As an antidote to non-effort, clearly recognize the antidote to diligence. Methods for correcting special faults: For the three situations of being blurry, dim, and appearing like a shadow, meditate on emptiness without conceptualization, leave the three doors unchanged, abide in a state of doing nothing, then carefully observe the painted image and meditate. Or alternate between meditating on non-conceptualization, etc. Regarding changes in the size, attire, posture, and shape of the body: Visualize the body as a huge, rough clay statue, like a statue on the wall of an old temple, extremely large. Pigeons fly in and out of the nostrils. Birds perch on the hands and feet, etc. Wild animals such as goats and sheep frolic and play on it. Visualize the various parts of the body covered with bird droppings and tsampa. Regarding changes in number: First visualize it as one or two, or divide it into several parts. If only color appears, then maintain that, and repeatedly and clearly visualize the various aspects of the shape. Some people may see different colors due to the amount of blood, bile, etc. in their body, such as those with more blood may see red, and those with more bile may see yellow. This may also be caused by illness, so check whether it is caused by illness and treat the illness. Regarding the gradual disappearance, the head of the body
