A Brief Summary of the General Characteristics of Generation Stage and the General Essentials of Retreat Intervals, The Lamp of Clear Jewel. Infinite Wisdom. A Brief Summary of the General Characteristics of Generation Stage and the General Essentials of Retreat Intervals, The Lamp of Clear Jewel. Infinite Wisdom. This is the treatise called A Brief Summary of the General Characteristics of Generation Stage and the General Essentials of Retreat Intervals, The Lamp of Clear Jewel. Namo Guru Deva Dakiniye (藏文,梵文天城体,guru deva ḍākinīye,Teacher, Deity, Dakini). With the wheel of pure wisdom, cutting off the impure appearance of clinging, the lords of the three roots, the victorious ones. In the essence of self-awareness, the three wisdoms complete, Inseparable, I contemplate, dissolving illusory thoughts into the sphere of reality. A mantra practitioner with little learning is like a blind person's eyes. Opening the essential collection of profound instructions. Light this jewel lamp. May it turn back from the wrong path and the abyss. In that, the explanation of the generation and completion stages, the order of meaning, must be understood from the treatises spoken by the wise. Here, for mantra practitioners who have not heard much and are beginners who wish to engage in retreat, a little that is needed is explained in two parts: The general essence of the generation stage. The practice of recitation and accomplishment. The first has five parts: The reason why the generation stage is needed. The key to aspiration and meditation. The yoga of recitation of limbs. The order of activities between sessions. Briefly mentioning the definitive and complete result. The first is: For example, if a field is tamed and a flawless seed is planted, and it is nurtured with warmth, water, and fertilizer, and the field is protected from pests, then without doubt the fruit will ripen and become the essence for nourishing body and life. Similarly, those who have entered the path of the Great Vehicle, at the very beginning, with renunciation and strong determination, reverse their minds from the appearances of samsara. Not just in words, but with the mind of seeking great enlightenment, through the stages of purifying obscurations and accumulating merit, the mind-stream is Well tamed, based on the analogy of a tamed field. Even if the view and conduct of the common vehicle are studied properly, it will take countless eons to attain Buddhahood. The key to definitely attaining Buddhahood in one lifetime or seven or sixteen lifetimes lies only in the unsurpassed Vajrayana. The basis or root of that path is only empowerment, like a flawless seed, it is established as the cause that does not arise without it.

Without chasing after false claims, one must mature the continuum with the four complete empowerments from a qualified lama who observes well. Merely receiving the empowerments is not enough. Mainly, one should cultivate by increasing the wisdom of the empowerment's meaning, and without damaging the vows even slightly, protect against obstacles on the path. Thus, obtaining the fruits of the two siddhis is certain, and this is established by the three valid cognitions of scripture, oral instructions, and experience. Among these, all of the unsurpassed empowerments are definitely categorized into the four empowerments of vase, secret, wisdom, and word. To cultivate the wisdom of these four, one must mainly practice the generation stage, self-generation, other-generation, and completion stage in sequence. To generate the special realization of the completion stage, one must first rely on the generation stage to tame the mind, etc. After the wisdom of the former arises in the continuum, one can gradually enter the latter. Except for a few with sharp faculties, even if one enters the completion stage from the beginning, the actual realization of the path will not arise in the continuum. As the Guhyagarbha Tantra says: "Whoever tames the mind like a drunken elephant with equipoise, and then relies on mantras and mudras, will achieve great and wondrous siddhis." Therefore, at first, contemplation-meditation has the key points of the five paths, so one will definitely obtain siddhis, as the great accomplished ones of the past have said. As the instructions of the Five Stages of Byangtse say: "For all contemplation-meditation, it is like walking on a single-log bridge, one on top of the other, closely connected, without being interrupted by other contemplations. This one point is very important." In general, there are five ways to enter the Vajrayana path: Faith as the path, like through attraction and invocation, although one cannot integrate the wisdom of the Tathagata into the continuum of ordinary beings, one can generate faith in it. Blessing as the path, like repeatedly practicing in this way, blessings naturally enter the continuum. Form as the path, the non-dual wisdom-blessing of the Tathagata, although it does not have color or shape, one visualizes the form of the deity's body, syllables, and hand implements, and visualizes the forms of one's own karma, afflictions, obscurations, and defilements. Essence as the path, abiding in the essence of one's own mind, which is free from all elaboration, or abiding in the suffering of samsara as suffering.
