In order to make the mind abide where it does not abide, it is necessary to know the student's disposition and habitual tendencies, as well as the teachings and conformity that are in accordance with their respective karmic connections. Furthermore, it is necessary to understand the three types of teachers: superior, middling, and inferior. The superior teacher, even without being in meditative equipoise, has the qualities of a Buddha, knowing the mindstreams of others as they are. For example, in the past, there was a son of Dedpon Stobden named Leg Ong, who had very little merit. He went forth before the Tathagata. Knowing that in his previous life he was accustomed to blue lotuses, the Tathagata said, "Take some blue lotuses from King Majedda's garden and distribute them among the Sangha." After they were distributed, he said, "The lotus is beneficial for the eyes, so wear them." Everyone wore them, becoming blue and purple. Because Leg Ong was accustomed to blue lotuses in his previous life, that condition, together with the blue lotus, awakened him, and he attained samadhi, and it is said that he attained the state of an Arhat. Then, the Bhagavan said, "You will kill the crocodile-given Naga A-Aza, and calm the surface of the water." The Noble One went to the city for alms, and finally flew over the water spring where it resided. The Naga became angry and rained down a rain of weapons from the sky. Again, the Noble One remained in the samadhi of fire, and they all saw a mass of fire blazing everywhere, and frightened, they went to the Noble One himself for refuge. The Noble One made the Nagas take refuge in the Three Jewels and gave them vows. They turned the creatures in the water into a water burial, put them in a begging bowl, and offered them to the Tathagata. The monks said, "The Noble Leg Ong is the best of those who are in meditative equipoise in the samadhi of fire." Like that. Furthermore, when the Bhagavan was dwelling in Shravasti, a monk named Senge, even though he meditated, could not make his mind stable. In order to awaken his habitual tendencies, the Bhagavan, when he went for alms, sent Ananda to his room, to sweep it with a broom, sprinkle it with perfume, scatter flowers, paint silk patterns, and arrange a lion throne. After that was done, he returned and asked, "Who went to my room?" Ananda replied, "I went." He thought, "This person will not deceive me." Then the monk Sen

Sitting on the throne, past habits awakened, and the mind found stability. Meditating based on that was like attaining the state of an Arhat. Furthermore, the Blessed One told some monks that if they were accustomed to white, blue, red, etc., in their previous lives, they should paint the rim of their begging bowls with white, red, etc., and focus on that, and their minds would become stable in an instant. By guiding them in this way, countless stories were told of quickly attaining results. If practitioners discussed this, then even without fully abiding, they could generate infinite and complete qualities in the disciple's mindstream, just like the Buddha, who knows everything. If a middling lama abides, he will know the disciple's disposition, etc. If he does not abide, he will not know. Therefore, he must guide from the state of abiding, based on the karmic connections of previous lives and the habits of this life. What is that like? For example, the teacher Nagarjuna was previously a wood gatherer, so he guided him based on his habitual tendencies. The teacher Aryadeva had him meditate on a tree growing on his head, and he attained a one-pointed mind. When he didn't know how to come out of the cave, the teacher said, "Now imagine cutting that tree with a saw and come out." Only then did he know how to come out. By meditating based on that, it was like attaining accomplishment. That is, attaining one-pointedness on the tree is quiescence because it is empty of other thoughts. Knowing its nature to be emptiness is insight. Likewise, a peaceful mind is quiescence, and knowing the Dharma is insight. Thus he spoke. Even so, he appears before all the people of Jambudvipa six times day and night, calling out and blessing them, but they cannot see him due to their bad karma. Previously, in Reting Phawongthang, he said he met the venerable Gyensapa. Furthermore, two Brahmin boys ordained under the son of Maudgalyayana. One was made to focus on white bones, and the other on the edge of the wind. For three months in the summer, their minds could not settle. The Blessed One entrusted them to Shariputra, who, after abiding and observing, understood the situation and had them meditate in reverse, like attaining the state of an Arhat. Also, Sga Gyalwa
