The twelve divisions of scripture are clarified in the texts. To summarize, there are three precious collections: the Vinaya Pitaka, which primarily teaches the method of practicing higher discipline; the Abhidhamma Pitaka, which primarily teaches the method of practicing higher wisdom; and the Sutra Pitaka, which primarily teaches the method of practicing higher mind. Secondly, there are five ways in which the object of focus, direct perception, arises: the object of focus itself, the divisions of the object, the reasoning that generates from thought, the thorough search that generates from meditation, and the result of the search—complete knowledge. The first includes the wisdom arising from hearing, thinking, and meditating, along with their corresponding factors. Their definitions have already been explained. The second has four types: pervasive object of focus, object of focus for purifying conduct, object of focus for the skilled, and object of focus for purifying afflictions. The definition of the first is: the general ground of meditation-arising should be completely eliminated. There are four divisions: the image with conceptualization should be completely eliminated by the shamatha and vipashyana of aspiration and attention; the image without conceptualization should be completely eliminated by the shamatha and vipashyana of suchness attention; the limit of things should be completely eliminated by the wisdom of as-it-is and as-many-as-there-are; complete realization is the complete transformation of all places. The definition of the second is: as an antidote to afflictions and strong conceptual thoughts, it should be initially meditated upon by yogis. There are five divisions: ugliness, as an antidote to desire, should be completely eliminated by the aspect of impurity; love, as an antidote to hatred, should be completely eliminated by the aspect of being lovely and pleasing; dependent origination has already been explained; the division of elements, as an antidote to pride, should be completely eliminated by the nature of the inner aggregates—the four great elements, the space element, and consciousness; mindfulness of breathing in and out, as an antidote to acting on conceptual thoughts, should be counted as three: arising, abiding, and ceasing. These are from the perspective of the object of focus. From the perspective of the subject possessing the object, these five in order are: as an antidote to desire, the object of desire

The samadhi of contemplating impurity and the samadhi associated with wisdom, as an antidote to hatred, the samadhi of contemplating harmful, disgusting, and pleasing aspects, etc.; as an antidote to delusion, the samadhi of contemplating the order of cyclic existence as it is, etc.; as an antidote to pride, the wisdom associated with separately distinguishing the internal aggregates and elements into the nature of the six elements; as an antidote to conceptual thought, the mindfulness and wisdom associated with counting the exhalation and inhalation as they are. The characteristic of the third is: any object of knowledge that, through knowledge, enters the ranks of those called wise. The divisions are: being skilled in the aggregates, elements, sense bases, dependent origination, and what is and is not the proper place. The first four have already been explained, and the fifth is whether or not a corresponding result arises from a corresponding cause. The characteristic of the fourth is: it should be completely severed by worldly or transcendental meditation. Third, regarding the reasoning that generates from thought, the characteristic is: the reason that becomes a means of examining reality. The divisions are four: the reasoning of dependence is: the reason that eliminates ignorance about the causal aspect of phenomena. The reasoning of function is: the reason that eliminates ignorance about the result aspect of phenomena. The reasoning of the nature of things is: the reason that eliminates ignorance about the nature of phenomena. The reasoning of establishing tenets is: the reason that eliminates ignorance about hidden meanings. Fourth, regarding the thorough search for the cause arising from meditation, the characteristic is: being associated with wisdom that examines without fully establishing the connection between name and meaning, etc. The divisions are four: the thorough search for name is: the wisdom, etc., that examines without establishing the expression, name, word, etc., by its own characteristic. The thorough search for things is: the wisdom, etc., that examines without establishing the meaning by its own characteristic, just as sound concepts apply terms. The search for imputation as essence is: the wisdom, etc., that examines without fully establishing the meaning of essence by its own characteristic for what is expressed and what expresses. The search for imputation as difference is: the meaning of difference for what is expressed and what expresses has not yet
