The Essence of the Abhidharma Collection, the Excellent Explanation, the Jewel Rosary. The Essence of the Abhidharma Collection, the Excellent Explanation, the Jewel Rosary. This is the treatise called "The Essence of the Abhidharma Collection, the Excellent Explanation, the Jewel Rosary." Homage to the Bhagavan, Lord of Speech. With the great arrow of impartial love, proclaiming the sound of fear, holding an unpleasant form, destroying the army of the twelve entwined flower arrows, I bow to the Great Hero, the Mighty One. Urged by the command of the all-holding Lama, and by some virtuous friends endowed with faith, diligence, and intelligence (many virtuous friends), in response to their respectful requests, in order to adorn the intelligent minds, with the churning stick of wisdom in the ocean of Dharma Abhidharma, the precious jewels of excellent explanations arising from the churning, stringing them on the thread of eloquent speech, I compose this rosary of excellent explanations. As it is said in the Treasury: Without thoroughly distinguishing the dharmas, there is no means to pacify the afflictions. By afflictions, beings wander in this ocean of existence. Therefore, the Teacher spoke of this. As it is said, without the wisdom that properly distinguishes the individual and general characteristics of all dharmas, one cannot cut off the root of existence, which is complete ignorance. And without the Abhidharma Pitaka, one cannot generate the wisdom that properly distinguishes the nature of reality. Therefore, those who desire good should gradually enter the Abhidharma Pitaka through hearing and so forth, and generate the wisdom that thoroughly distinguishes the dharmas. Thus, for those who are beginners, as a branch for entering the Abhidharma Pitaka, this treatise will be written, briefly explaining the individual and general characteristics of the dharmas in concise and very clear words. In general, there are two types of Abhidharma: ultimate Abhidharma and conventional Abhidharma. The definition of the first is: stainless wisdom and its retinue. Examples are: the paths of transcendence, such as the path of seeing. The definition of the second is: obtaining that ultimate Abhidharma.

Any collection of paths and treatises that become methods. Among them, the path refers to the contaminated wisdom included in the accumulations and preparations, along with its retinue. The treatises refer to the sutras that mainly explain the self-characteristics and common characteristics of all phenomena, and the various treatises that explain the intentions of these sutras. Here, there are two ways to ascertain the objects expressed in the treatises: first, to generally ascertain the three dharmas; second, to separately explain the difficult-to-understand points. First, for the three dharmas, one should understand through their respective nature, classification, arrangement, and fourfold differentiation. First, there are three: the nature of aggregates, which is to mentally gather all similar things into one whole; the nature of elements, which is the already arisen appropriation, grasping through any of the place, object, nature, etc., manifest or seed; the nature of sources, which is the future arising appropriation, opening the door of arising through any of the place and object, manifest or seed. Second, there are three classifications: first, the classification of aggregates has two: classification into two and classification into five. The first is classification into contaminated and uncontaminated aggregates, or classification into appropriated and non-appropriated aggregates. Among them, contaminated aggregates and appropriated aggregates have the same meaning, so their nature is: associated with any of the six doors of appropriation that have the nature of desire. Uncontaminated aggregates and non-appropriated aggregates also have the same meaning, so their nature should also be understood as the opposite of the former (things not associated with any of the six doors of appropriation that have the nature of desire). The second is classification into five: form aggregate, feeling aggregate, perception aggregate, formation aggregate, and consciousness aggregate. The nature of these aggregates should also be in order, starting from "mentally gathering all things that can become form into one whole," successively adding "all things that have the nature of feeling," "all things that can completely distinguish names," "all conditioned phenomena that are not included in the other four aggregates," "all things that can completely distinguish the essence of things, mentally gathering into one whole." The classification of elements is the three elements of faculty, object, and consciousness. The nature of these elements in order is: the already arisen place of appropriation
