and the form realm and the formless realm. Among these, the desire realm and the first dhyana, including the special entity of the first dhyana, are places with investigation and analysis. The special first entity is a place without investigation but only analysis. The form and formless realms from the second dhyana upwards are places without investigation or analysis. Among these, the establishment of places is as follows. In the desire realm, there are thirty-six places, namely, the eight great hot hells, which are: the Reviving Hell, the Black Line Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Howling Hell, the Great Howling Hell, the Hot Hell, the Very Hot Hell, and the Uninterrupted Hell. Opposite these great hot hells, beyond a hundred thousand yojanas, there are eight cold hells, which are: the Blister Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the Chattering Teeth Hell, the Kihu Hell, the Achu Hell, the Blue Lotus Cracking Hell, the Red Lotus Cracking Hell, and the Great Red Lotus Cracking Hell. The Reviving Hell is located thirty-two thousand yojanas below this. Below that, separated by four thousand yojanas each, are the other hells. Just like the Reviving Hell, the first cold hell is also similar to it. Below that, separated by two thousand yojanas each, are the other hells. Because pretas, asuras, and animals wander together with gods and humans, their places are not established separately. There are twelve places for humans, namely, the four continents and the eight subcontinents, which will be explained below. There are six places for the desire realm gods, namely, from the Four Great Kings to the Paranirmitavasavartin. The place of Mara is a special place belonging to the Paranirmitavasavartin. The neighboring hells are near the great hot hells and the cold hells, so there is no special place. Some neighboring hells can even be seen among humans, as it is said, the Venerable Maudgalyayana

Bu: I saw sentient beings burning and intensely burning, spreading from all directions and intensely burning, becoming one flame, and so on, as it is said. Thus, these thirty-six places are called the desire realm. In the form realm, there are eighteen places, as follows: From completely meditating on the small, medium, and large of the first dhyana, the Brahma host, Brahma attendant, and Great Brahma are produced. From completely meditating on the small, medium, and large of the second dhyana, the lesser light, immeasurable light, and clear light are produced. From completely meditating on the small, medium, and large of the third dhyana, the lesser virtue, immeasurable virtue, and vast virtue are produced. From completely meditating on the small, medium, and large of the fourth dhyana, the cloudless, merit-born, and great fruit are produced. The non-conceptual beings belong to the great fruit, so there is no other place. By completely meditating on the fourth dhyana with and without outflows alternately, in small, medium, large, very large, and extremely large ways, the five pure abodes, namely the non-hot, non-afflicted, well-appearing, well-seeing, and Akanistha, are produced. Beyond the pure abodes, there is the place of the Great Isvara, which is where bodhisattvas abiding on the ten bhumis are born after completely meditating on the ten bhumis. In the formless realm, there are the four places. Furthermore, since there is no body, there is no other place. Regarding the measure of the bodies of sentient beings, it is as follows: The measure of the human body of the Jambudvipa people is uncertain, sometimes large and sometimes small, which is their own four and a half cubits. The measure of the bodies of the three continents, such as Purvavideha, is certain, which is their own four and a half cubits. The body is very large. The measure of the gods of the Four Great Kings is one-fourth of a yojana. The measure of the Thirty-three gods is slightly more than one-fourth of a yojana. The measure of Indra is half a yojana. The Yama gods are also half a yojana. The desire realm gods above that

The bodies of the various heavens are: each lower level is greater than the upper level by a quarter of a yojana. The bodies of the Brahma hosts are half a yojana. The bodies of the Brahma attendants are one yojana. The bodies of the Great Brahma hosts are one and a half yojanas. The bodies of the Lesser Light hosts are two yojanas. From there on, each lower level is twice the size of the upper level. Except for the Cloudless, their bodies should be reduced by three yojanas. The size of the bodies of the great hell beings is uncertain. Those who have committed and accumulated extremely great sins and non-virtuous deeds, their bodies will become large. The bodies of others will also change accordingly. Just as with the great hell beings, so too with the cold hells, the solitary hells, the neighboring hells, as well as the pretas and animals. The bodies of the asuras should be understood to be the same size as the gods of the Thirty-three. The formless beings have no measure because they are formless. The measure of lifespan is as follows: The people of Jambudvipa determine the measure of lifespan by reckoning thirty days as a month and twelve months as a year. Sometimes the lifespan becomes immeasurable, sometimes it reaches eighty thousand years, and sometimes it decreases to ten years. The lifespan of those in the Eastern Continent of Lushen and so forth is fixed. The lifespan of those in the East is two hundred and fifty years. The lifespan of those in the West is five hundred years. The lifespan of those in the North is one thousand years. What is fifty human years is one day and night for the Four Great Kings. Reckoning thirty days as a month and twelve months as a year, the gods of the Four Great Kings live for five hundred divine years. What is one hundred human years is one day and night for the Thirty-three. In the same way, reckoning thirty days as a month, they live for one thousand divine years. From there on, the lifespan and days and nights of the Other Emanating Delighting in Emanation gods are twice that of the previous level. The measure of lifespan also...
